I’m thinking of buying a 16 foot Lund Laker w/ a 40 horsepower motor, can I tow it safely with a Toyota Rav4?

Look up the towing capacity for that vehicle. Then see if that boat is under that weight.

What is your towing limit (listed in manual)?

There is no way that boat weighs that much. Should be around 800 dry, 300 for the trailer, 100 max for the motor, and maybe what another 3-500lbs of gear and crap.

    Boat dry 450#
    40 2 stroke 165#
    40 4 stroke 240#
    Gas 6#/gal
    Gear ?
    Trailer 150-200#
    No problem I can see

Pulling the load not an issue…

Stopping the load is where I’d be concerned, might add surge brakes.

For that load… There is no way you will notice lack of stopping power behind a Rav4.

Is it all wheel drive? If it’s front wheel drive you may have problems at the landing ramp. I’m sure it will pull it fine just not ideal if it’s front wheel drive. Then again, my first car was a ford escort and I pulled a 16 foot V-bottom with a 25 merc on it. I went through a clutch but as long the landing wasn’t to slippery it always got me out.

it’s 4 wheel drive, so no worries there.

thanks to all who replied. I’m convinced it’ll do the job, now I need to convince my wife that the Lund Laker is worth $4,000 and I’m set.

I towed a 16 foot Alumacraft Backtroller (almost identical to the Lunker) and a 40 hp Yamaha 4 stroke all last year with a Rav4 4 cylinder. Tow capacity is 1500 lbs and loaded down we were approximately 1400 lbs. So it was legal but not good other than short 20 minutes drives to local landings.

I did take it on one 5 hour trip with a few big hills and lots of down shifting. Now 6 months later, whenever shifting into reverse to exit the garage there is a distinct “click” when shifting… This was a one year situation and I will not do it again. Am buying a different boat and vehicle this spring.

So, my conclusion is If you have the 6 cylinder Rav4 you’re probably okay with a Lunker – otherwise if its a 4 cyl… I would say no if you are towing any regular distances at all.
