Walleye Elbow?

Might just be a sign of getting older but this last fall I developed a heck of a case of walleye elbow. Just the elbow on my casting arm. Thought it was just going to be a temporary thing from spending a ton of time on the river last fall. It had started to feel better the last few weeks almost to the point of forgetting about it. Then yesterday it kicked in again. Go to set the hook on a fish and it was like someone was had stuck a knife in my elbow. The fish wasnt even that big.

Anyone else ever deal with something like this? Wife tells me to just take a few aspirins but I want to try and get it cleared up before spring fishing.

Two years ago I had tennis elbow so bad I had a very hard time holding and setting hooks. Especially with bigger rods for pike and bass. It was a big problem that year. Time took care of it. A lot of time.

Three falls ago it was so bad I couldn’t even cast anymore. The only thing that worked was a well placed shot of cortisone. Dicey and a last resort thing, the Dr. said relief could last a week or if lucky and placed correctly it could last the rest of your life……..so far so good. Money well spent

I went with cortisone too. Still took many months to go away. Wearing one of those special arm bands helped a lot.
Unless Mike you have a pain right in the joint? That’s not what we are talking about.

Yep. Right in the joint. Not the entire joint. Just the top side.

Right where the two bones come together. My guess would be the cartiledge between the bones or what ever is in there.

I bumped my elbow this summer at work. Didn’t think much of it at the time but my elbow got worse instead of better. It got to the point I could not pick anything up with my hand on that arm. I ended up seeing a doctor and having treatment and wearing a special elastic band around my elbow to take the pressure off the nerve. The elastic band really did the trick but it still took several weeks to heal.

Mike, I’ve had this a few times over the years. Ice, aspirin, beer and time.

Just use your other arm to lift the beer.

So switching from 12 ounce Miller Lites to 16 ounce PBR’s this last fall might of brought this on?

Did try switching a reel handle yesterday to try and use the other arm. Going to have to work on that. Got lots of pitching jigs coming up in a couple of months. Hoping to get it fixed up by then. Kinda cringe thinking of what those spring walleyes and sturgeon on the rain river will do to it.

I think you nailed it. But before you go back to the smaller cans you must first try using your other arm. That should allow your casting arm to heal while still supplying you with all those 16 ounces of goodness.

This worked for me when I had this issue too:

Wearing one of those special arm bands that velcros below the elbow.

WalMart or any drug store will have them. Just ask at the pharmacy counter if you can’t find them.

Mike, I have had arthritis issues for years caused from working in the trades. The doctor recommended Naproxen sodium tablets 220 mg. I have been taking 1 tablet a day for over 8yrs now. Naproxen (same as Aleve but cheaper) is a anti inflammatory medicine. You can find it next to the Aleve. This medicine works great for me!

    Just a suggestion. Bruce

    Tennis Elbow

This would be my guess as well, especially considering your line of work. The arm bands mention do help quite a bit, good luck with it.

That idea is going to the very bottom of the list.

Try celebrex, it ain’t cheap, but it is a goodie for sure. Dr. told me it is last thing, next is dope and none of us want that nasty stuff.

Mike, one other thing that will probably help. If you use a mouse frequently, make sure to switch over to your other hand/arm. That clicker in the mouse agrivates that nerve. At least it does on me!

I had a horrible case of this a few years ago and the stretch helped me immensely. Put your hands together in front of you fingers extended and matched up left to right and then move your fingers and palms slightly left and right repeat every hour or so. Take anti inflamatory meds helped quite a bit too.

you will be supprised how well that arm band works. try that first, before any pills, way cheaper. i have one and put it on when needed. sometimes it takes care of it in a day or two, and sometimes it takes a week or so

I developed the same issue blade baiting this fall. The first time I noticed it, I just about lost the rod into the lake when a fat sauger nailed the blade. Just when I think it is getting better, my 3 year old daughter decides her feet are too tired and needs to be carried. Ouch! I don’t know why I can’t pick her up in the other arm.

Ended up taking the manly way out of this and upon the advice of my wife ended up over at her massage therapist. Wow. The wife does get it right once and a while. The therapist got her finger’s in there down to the bone it felt like and worked on loosing up the muscles. Ended up doing both arms, wrists and shoulders. Shoulders are freed up again. Guess I had forgotten how far my head can turn side to side. Elbows are loosened up again but still a little tender from where she dug into them. Guess it may take a little time to see if one treatment works on them or if it will take more. If it takes more than one sign me up to go back. The treatment was not pain free but dang did that hurt good.

Any of you guys feeling a little tight in the shoulders in the north metro check Danielle out at Essentially Massage. Might not be a bad idea to send the wives, girl friends or both either. Good way to get those extra points needed for that up coming fishing pass.
