broken ipad screen

I broke the glass cover on my ipad. The screen still functions, but the glass is shattered.

Apple wants $250 bucks to repair, which means that they give me a “new” ipad and take the old one. I imagine that I don’t really get a brand new ipad, but a reconditioned one. The downside is that it’s expensive and I have to transfer all the data on the broke machine to my PC and then transfer it again to the new one. The upside is that the warranty still stands.

A store in town wants $150 and they can replace the screen on my existing ipad while I wait. The downside is that the apple warranty on the ipad is void b/c they are not an authorized dealer. The upside is that its cheaper and I don’t have to transfer a million apps that my wife bought for the kids. Not to mention, I get to keep the original machine that I bought-not a reconditioned model.

Anyone have experience with either of these scenarios?

My kids put us in the same boat last month. We went with the local company and were very happy. I think that most of the time a warranty is a joke. Good luck, Joe

I’ve made the same repair on an iPhone. An iPad can’t be much different? I checked where I bought the replacement glass from and they charge $109 for a replacement iPad glass only (not including install). I’d say $150 all in seems reasonable. You don’t mention how old it is and how much warranty remains.

You should consider backing up the device to iTunes no matter. Its going to crash at some point. At least in my experience all “computer” devices crash at one point or another.

Apple will transfer all of that for you at the store, just tell them you need it done. Personally I would go with the 3rd party. There is not much to go wrong in an iPad unless you drop it!!!

The wife caught me looking at dirty movies and hit me over the head with it. J/K

I guess i would say that they are not that durable. It fell off a counter onto a tile floor. The corner hit first and is where the shattering occurred. I was a little surprised that it broke tho. It didn’t seem to hit THAT hard, and we had it in a protective case. The screen still works (I’m using it now), but the glass cover is spiderwebbed and drops a shard of glass every so often.
