I have an add on Craigslist for some wood flooring. Asking 4 digits for the price so its not a small purchase. I have a leery feeling about the response I got this afternoon. Wanted to get some other opinions. Merry Christmas all!

    Hello,

I appreciate your quick response, According to the description, I’m
okay with the price and the condition posted on cl. I am ready to make
instant purchase. My mode of payment would be in CERTIFIED CHECK and i
will arrange for a local pick up as soon as you get the check, because
that is the only inconvenient means for me and due to my work frame i
can not be able to get there and i promise everything will go
smoothly. I really wish to be there to check out the item but i don’t
have chance cause am very busy person. Concerning the pick up, i will
arrange for it after you receive the payment and it clears… Pls get
back to me with below info so that i can proceed with the payment
immediately if you are selling to me.

    Full Name:
    Address:
    City:
    State:
    Zip Code:
    Cell #:
    Phone #:
    Last asking price :

And as soon as this is provided, the payment will be mail out to you
on Wednesday and i will let you know when its mailed out.

Thanks and i hope we handle this in good faith while waiting to hear
from you. i will add an additional $50 so that you can hold it for me
    till the check reach you.

    Merry Christmas in advance !!!

    Best Regards

I thought that too. I would never send him the info requested but I don’t see what he could scam me for.

He sends that same response to everyone to get their info then sells it. Probably isn’t within 1000 miles of you.

That would just be the start of his long drawn-out process

Think about it…if you were about to spend 4 digits on used flooring on c-list would you just send an email to a stranger and tell him the check is in the mail

I, too, think it is highly suspicious for a scam.
If he were paying by ‘paypal’, that would be different, or make the time to come and look. Nothing works better than cash.

I’m suprised he didn’t ask for your bank account number to verify you could accept the check.

What comes next is – oops I sent the wrong check. This check was made out for $2000.00 over your asking price( by mistake) please send me this extra back and you can keep $500.00 for your troubles. P.S. My bank will not take a money order so please send cash.

I had a simulare thing with rental of my timeshare. Only it was $80,000 over. I still have the check, never fell for it.

It’s a common scam. They are more than likely overseas. Their IP address has probably already changed as well.

    hmm let’s see
    1. You’re ad specifically identified the item your selling as “wood flooring”, yet this response never says I’m interested in the wood flooring you have advertised on Craigslist; just refers to it as the “item”. When I’m interested in buying something that I see I craigslist, my response to the seller always includes a mention of what it is that I saw and am interested in; you know, just in case that seller happens to have more than one thing listed on CL right now.
    2. You listed the price right in you’re ad, correct? Yet at the end of the list of info he wants from you is “asking price”. If he’s truly interested in your wood flooring, shouldn’t he already be keenly aware of your price?

Those kind of replys are always scams. You can tell many by how they are written. Poor english and grammar. Mine is not so hot but their’s is a dead givaway. That scam has been around for about 12 to 15 years. Just delete it.

For sure it’s a scam. We got the same one. Wait until you see the size of the check they’ll send you. We took the check down to the bank and they for sure said it was a fake. It was sent from Seattle, WA and the bank was in Rhode Island. The person told us he wanted this taken care of as soon as possible because he was going on vacation. We were to send our check to some lady in North Carolina. I turned it all over to the post office.

This one definitely scam, I 100% am sure.

The ones I have a tough time with are ones that are just really short and simple like “whats your best price” or “is it still for sale”.

You would think you would have more questions than that if its a car, boat, or even something simpler. I always wonder if it is just someone who wants me to email them back so they can send me junk mail. I never list my email address or phone number on C list, so they have to initially contact me through the anonymous email provided.

On the other hand, it might be somebody just emailing you quick on their cell phone, or an older person who is not great with a computer and doesn’t want to type a lot. Either way, its really annoying trying to sell something on craigslist, but its free, so I keep using it.

I have never bought or sold anything on CL. So if this guy sends you a check, you cash it,it clears how can anything go wrong?

The problem lys in he will want you to send a portion back to him and you keep a percentage. He lives out of the coutry and you don’t and you get arrested. Any chance this is from Nigeria or any other African country, if it is just throw it away and as soon as you can. They are useing you as a stepping stone. This was on national news and there was a lot of people that lost many 10’s of thousands of dollars, alot of old folks lost thier life savings.

What thier doing is thier going to send you an extra amount when your ready to do the trasaction just to make sure you get enough money. It sounds good but you have to send them back some of the money. Thats where they make thier money. Id bet if you take thier check to any bank or check cashing institution they will not even cash it for you. They haven’t told you everything yet, their just wanting to get you interisted right now.

Vehicles are the worst. Every time we move our vehicle back to the top we get somebody that is in the navy or a guy that is an oceanographer who wants to buy our mini van for his 17 yr old son. Every 17 yr olds dream; a used mini van. Total scam when they agree to your price right off the bat.
