i like the down scan on my Bird. It does show bottom content very nice but could live with out it. Now the GPS and lakemaster chip on my bird is a must have for river fishing. Just fantastic for fishing wingdams and other structures. Think it was just a $100 or so more for the down scan so it was worth that.

Now the images I have seen on side scan are something. Down scan doesnt hold a candle to some of them.

Once you spend a day on the river with the down imaging, yiou’ll find it can really help out in turbulent water. It’s not perfect, but it does give you a better image than the standard 2D. I find I need it the most to verify or confirm what I see sometimes in 2D on the river. Often I’ll pick up a false echo or return from the turbulence off of structure and the DI gives a better resolution of what I’m looking at. Especially when I’m trying to key in on schools of bait fish.
