Usually this time of the year I spend most of my nights in a fish house catching slab crappies and hog walleyes, but since we haven’t had enough ice I have been playing old timers hockey at the arena.

This is what happens when mother nature gives me a break between deer season and ice fishing seasons. Some day I will learn to wear my cage with my helmet rather than take it off, I teach the kids to keep the cage on. Apparently I don’t practice what I preach.

I play in 3 seperate adult leagues. I usually play goalie but when I skate out I never wear a cage. Even after bringing a few buddies to the er and one loosing a few teeth. You would think we would learn at some point. I’m going to go put my cage on for a week or so, forget about the bad then take it off again.

Stick in front of the net, 2nd shift into the game. Looked like someone killed a deer on the ice, easy to follow blood trail all the way to the locker room.

    Yikes….looks like a good one.

Years ago I thought I would try cageless for open hockey…of course 1st time….got a puck in the face. Left me with just a couple black eyes luckily, been sportin a cage ever since.

My most severe hockey injury playing in adult leagues was a deep tissue bruise on my lower back. I was driving to forecheck and lost an edge. I ended up slamming into the boards in the corner. When I got up and went to the bench I swear I could fear things tearing. It took about a week for the bruises to actually start surfacing.

Off on a total tangent, we our hosting Hockey Day MN this year on Pokegama and I just finishing editing the layout for all the activities concessions (yes there will be adult beverages served away from the rink), rink layout, bleachers, secondary skating pond for children, warming tents, locker rooms, camera locations, cable runs, electric lines, lighting, announcement booths, and parking.

Looks like it will be a good time, hopefully we will have enough ice on the lake for it; otherwise we have two alternate locations on lakes in town picked. Either way should be a great hockey day.

It’s very becoming. Chicks dig scars.

Yep, its healing nicely into yet another facial scar caused by hockey. This makes 3 where I have to have stitches last one, was about 15 years ago where I sliced my icebrow to the bone on someones skate in a pickup game.

    Hey Mike,

I heard that the rink location is in front of the golf course. Is that still the plan?

    Thanks!

What weekend is Hockey Day in Minnesota. We are trying to plan a trip to Grand Rapids for a weekend of ice fishing and taking in an outdoor game might be a fun activity.

January 19th is Hockey Day MN, the plan is to have it in front of the golf course on Lake Pokegama; safe ice permitting.

Our houses will be out near the golf course on a few humps and reefs I know about and there will ice games, food, and adult bevys not too far from the rink.

I don’t think its broke, they didn’t take any x-rays; but I have been having headaches the last three days. So I may end up going back in to get it looked at.

Here is a picture of my wedding ring after I caught a slap shot last night (goalie) in the crease of the glove instead of the pocket.
