Turned the water off to the cabin last weekend. However I forgot to turn off the water heater. Electric 80 gallon heater. Nobody will be using the cabin. What problems will I have if I don’t get up there to turn off the water heater?

    Thanks, Marmike

If you turned the water off, then it will evaporate the water left in the tank. If water is on and heat in the cabin, yes just higher electric bill. If no heat and water is off , I’d go turn heater off and drain it.

Agree with the above comments. There are two elements for the water heater. Cost about $50 each normally. If the drive is worth it I would go back, shut it off and drain it. If not, well worse case you have to replace the elements next spring. Chalk it up as a learning experience but it is not that big of a deal.

Not sure how water evaporates in a sealed container?

your biggest issue would be a prolonged power outage and possible frozen/burst tank. Other than that, not much to worry about.

If you drained the water heater, you will be replacing the elements in the spring.
