Does he have any muskie gear right now? What types of lures does he typically fish with? Price range?

At present he has a net, we are getting him a Abu Garcia Amb. 6600C4 for the reel and he likes to throw buck tails but does use some jerks… I would hate to say money is not an issue but it somewhat is.. thinking 150 max

That Abu Garcia C4 is not a very versatile musky reel. I would probably only use a C4 as a topwater reel if I currently had one. I owned a C4 about 6 years ago and it didn’t even make it through a whole fishing season…I sold it to someone that used it for parts.

Abu Revo Toro is a good all around musky reel and they can take a beating. The Toro is the only reel I haven’t been able to break YET. Rods, there are many good ones. Tackle Industries makes some good rods at a reasonable price and they are good rods for someone new to the sport.

TI makes some good rods at very reasonable prices and their customer service is great. The 8′ MH Power rod is a decent all-around rod (if there is such a thing) and it’s on sale right now.

If you are willing to bump it up to about $180 you can get a 8′ Heavy action St. Croix Premier that is a really nice versitle rod. I have a 8’6″ Fenwick Elite Tech XH that has been a really nice versitle rod for me the last 2 seasons and is on sale a couple of place right now for under $200. I don’t have any experience with Tackle Industries rods, but I know a lot of guys really like them and they will keep you closer to your budget. I wouldn’t go under 8′ no matter what rod you choose
