Why couldn’t this have happened last year and we could’ve kept Chryst. He was the reason those teams weren’t 7-5 the last few years.

Have to hope Chryst wants to come home. Too bad he probably won’t leave Pitt after one year. Smart by Bielema. I’m sure Barry noticed this year that Chryst was the key too.

I only wished Barry would have forced Bielema out last year and kept Chryst, kind of like what happened at Oregon when Bellotti ‘retired’ and Kelly got the job.

Shocked by this news. But I will hold comment until the new hire is made. Be carefull what you wish for. Winning games is not as easy as you think. say what you want about him but his teams won a lot of games.

Oh great. I think Bret’s three Big Ten titles make him marketable but 3 Rose Bowl losses may have made him a goat. I’d like to see Doeren come back.

I live (nto where i’m from) in a state that apparently has a pro football team. They used to have a coach that everyone hated and made fun of. (including me as a Packer fan – but that doesn’t count). That coach was in the playoffs nearly every year and won a bunch of games. What their record since???

The guy was very very good at recruiting, he brought in Wilson last year and that was pure genius. Couldn’t win the big one like Barry but his coaching was getting better…As long as we dont go back to Don Morton and the Veer

How about a coach who after 6 years knows how to properly use time outs. Using two in the first two minutes of the 2nd half of the rose bowl was genius.

got to get to Rose Bowls before you can misuse timeouts though. I bet Jerry K. would Kill (pun intended) to misuse timeouts in Rose Bowls.

Does anyone know the money Arkansas gave him? Im guessing it was big for him to leave a program like WI.

I hope barry comes back but that is wishful thinking.

In my opinion, he was exposed this year as far as his coaching ability goes. I have to give him credit for being a good recruiter though.

Yeah, he made it during the down years of the Big 10. OSU was no longer competing for national titles, Michigan is not what they were, Penn State was no longer a powerhouse.

This year he made it to the title game by default. 3rd in the division is not championship pedigree. I love the Badgers, but I’ve said for years, Paul Chryst carried Bielema, and counter acted his stupid mistakes.

Look at how well this guy was set up. He walked into an established program with Barrys staff, with Barrys players. He had one of the top offensive coordinators in the country.

This team did not lose 3 more conference games this year just because Russel Wilson wasn’t there. They lost them because they had a coach who was not capable of winning close games that count.

Go ahead and love BB, I for one will not miss him.

My guess would be Arkansaw needed to pay him 3-4 million base, a motorcycle and a 23 year old blonde.

I think I heard on the radio that Alverez wants to coach this years Rose Bowl.

They lost more games this year because they had six new coaches and they lost 7 players who went to the NFL. Show me any program in the country that can stay right where they were the following year after losing that many, quality coaches! Not to mention the quality players that graduated.

Together, it was a lot to overcome right out of the gate.

I don’t argue with the fact that he was a poor game manager. He was poor at that.

As for Paul Chryst carrying Brett Bielema. Get serious!

Paul will have a chance to show how good he is as a head coach in Pittsburgh. I won’t hold his teams performance against him this year. No doubt it’s going to take him a couple years to get established. Give him at least 4 years.

Brett has not recruited all that well the past few years. Other than Russel Wilson, how many 4 star recruits have we landed? Very few.

How many 5 star recruits have we landed? None.

What he did well was get rid of riff raff and coach up 2 & 3 star recruits so that they could compete with the Ohio St’s, Michigan’s and whoever else, even though those teams have a bunch of 4 & 5 star recruits.

Brett did a fantastic job overall. I especially appreciate the fact that his players were stand up people, not a bunch of criminals or me first kind of guys. I can and will support a guy like that.

Best of luck to you at Arkansas Brett!

I hope we can land someone just as good or better.

    Just my 2 cents!

Brings up a few good questions.

    1) Who do you think will be interesting in the job?

    2) Who do you think Barry will go after?

I hate adding to the speculation, but heard on the radio that he wasn’t given “much” money at WI to pay assistants. I also heard he got 1.5mil from AR. Not sure if any of it is true…

I’d give Coach Bielima a grade of C- because he was handed a great program that wasn’t improved. Recruiting he gets a C, play calling-over site of assistant coaches a D, clock management a F,The deer in the headlights look he gets an A. The dude was average at best and me thinks Alvares has got something up his sleeve. I think Barry had to school coach B and had alot to say regarding play selection against Nebraska,it clearly showed. Barry’s got a great coach in mind for a replacement and you can take that to the bank. JMHO

so, he’s not a good game manager and he’s not a good recruiter. you are right he sounds like a great coach thanks for spelling it out for me.

I would have to assume that more money was in the equation but he is also moving “up” from the Big 10 to the SEC where theoretically, he can get a shot at a national title.

    Nice play on words.

He took 2 & 3 star athletes and made them good enough to beat 4 & 5 star athletes. Crappy coaches don’t do that!

Every coach has there strengths & weakness. I never said he was a great coach but he definitely did not let us slide and he had to replace assistant coaches just about every year he was hear.

Do you really think Arkansas would be signing him if they thought as little of him as you do?

Take a look at Minnesota’s football team and tell me we couldn’t have done a whole lot worse!

Not a play on words at all. Read your post. You said “poor game manager”, “has not recruited well”.

Go ahead and tell me that he’s better than Don Morton. I don’t care. If you like that blank stare whenever things get tough, then more power to you. Did you ever see that from Barry? No, you didn’t. You saw Barry get fired up, chew somebody a new A-hole or at least do something.

If you want to be a 7-5 team with an occasional 10-2 season then he’s your guy. I have higher aspirations. I want a real coach that will bring UW a title. It’s a tall order, but it will never happen unless a coach who can manage big games and recruit top talent come in.

Name one position that he’s improved since Barry left. With the exception of the one year transfer of Wilson, QB hasn’t gotten better. Offensive line is what it has been for 20 years (maybe worse this year). Running back is solid as always. Secondary is worse. Linebackers are good. Defensive line is worse.

Wasn’t BB a “defensive minded coach”? Wasn’t BB also a specialist in special teams? Hasn’t the special teams been a weak spot since he took over?

My point is, he’s a mediocre coach who walked into a great situation. People want to compare him to Don Morton. He’s not Don Mortons replacement. He’s Barry Alverez’s replacement. Measure up to the guy you replace, not the worst you’ve ever had.
