I’ve had this nagging cold for over 10 days now and have tried almost everything in the medicine cabinet plus the neighbors home remedies too and I can’t shake it. Anyone got any ideas that work for them, I’m really drug down because of it as I’m getting about 4 or 5 hrs a night sleep. Got any ideas?

Lol Brian, If I said that around the wife she’d help put it on.

Got a nagging cough? Take a heavy dose of ex-lax. You’ll be too scared to cough anymore!

If I let my wife put duct tape on me I’m sure it would hurt real bad coming off. Don’t think I’ll let her do it.

My kids and also my wife have had this nasty cold now for 3 weeks each. I have a feeling it is my turn soon. You just have to let it run it’s course. On a good note, the colds got us out of having to go to Dubuque to the outlaws, feast. Small victories… Back in college the mantra was drink a cold and starve a fever. So have a few cocktails and you will feel much better and then the hang over will keep your mind off it and the next thing you know it will be gone.

Garlic, it really seems to help and cut down the length of nagging colds for me.

I use Zicam (zinc and other things) and Vit C as soon as it starts. Seems to cycle the cold faster and lesson the intensity also! And of course calling in sick and going fishing anyways! I can be sick in the boat as much as on the couch!

Not so. They will help stave one off if you take them before hand, but once you’ve got it, you’re stuck with it.

    I personally like Alka-Seltzer Cold.

Got back from the dogpound from seeing the vet a couple hours ago and I have bronchitas and maybe a touch of pnuemonia, she wanted to take x-rays to conferm pnuemonia and I said can’t you just give me a stiffer antibiotic, so she did. She gave me an inhaler to open up the bronchial passages so they could drain, an antibiotic and some cough suryp with codiene for the pain in the ribs when coughing. I took some a couple hours ago, layed down and I feel better already. Sometimes you just got to go see the doc. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Seems like it’s been going around(pnuemonia). I know of 5-6 people that have it.

The lady at the childcare where I take my grandkids had it and she said hers was pnuemonia and she felt like she broke a rib with all the persistant coughing. When I coughed I felt every old injury in my ribs that I had ever gotten. The bad thing about it is this stuffs very hard to get rid of, otherwise I wouldn’t even have gone to the doctor.

I’m a firm believer in chicken soup or chicken broth 3 times a day. And lots of rest. When ever I’ve felt a cold coming on I immediately make up a batch of chiken soup and start eating it. Am never down with a cold.
I don’t like pumping my body full of drugs.

Sounds old fashioned, but taking a good hot sauna and the rubbing the bottom of my feet with Vicks-Vap-O-Rub and putting on socks at bedtime makes a difference. Old finnish remedy……..

old family recipe (for adults only)…

    Large coffee cup…
    fill 2/3 with Brandy (VSOP)
a little less than 1/3 of water
    Nuke it HOT
    Add 2 tablespoons of honey
    1 tablespoon of lemon juice
    stir with a cinnamon stick.

Sip the concoction… but finish before it gets cold.
If you still feel like crap.. repeat.

The hot brandy sweats the sickness out of you. Honey coats the throat. Lemon juice opens the pores. Cinnamon is for flavor.

If you have repeated more than twice… you likely are feeling just fine anyway… pass out and sleep like a baby!

The above is not a joke. I don’t get sick often… but when I do, it floors me for a day or maybe two. I do the above.. and almost always feel good the next day.

I thought about that Mary and this morning I’m going to the grocery store and buy enough chicken to make a small pot of chicken soup.

I got up this morning and I’m still congested some but not as bad as a couple days ago. The intensity isn’t as bad but its still there. I like chicken soup and pepper so I’m going to put in a little extra along with an extra onion.

Mary your an old school healthy cook, what kinds of vegetables do you put in yours, anything specifically just for colds besides the chicken? White or dark meat and is one better then the other. Mine don’t have to have noodles and I don’t feel like making any right now so just chicken and a few vegetables. Cabbage, carrots, celery, turnips? Any spices for a cold that I should know about?

Its pretty cool when someones got a cold or something wrong and the IDO community pitches in with remedies, its good medicine and advice for anyone else that needs it too…

You mentioned having trouble sleeping because of the congestion. Try sitting up partially and sleeping in a recliner – the congestion drains out better so you can breathe and sleep better.

I’d also suggest saving the alcohol to celebrate with AFTER the cold is gone – no need to add more dehydration and a hangover to a cold.

Good luck, and a pepperoni pizza usually hits the spot for me when I’m sick. I don’t think it has any curative powers, but it is something tastes good when you have the crud.

I saute celery, carrots, onionss and garlic or garlic powder will do until soft. Then I add water, enough to cover the chicken. Add salt and pepper I like pleasoning. Cook till tender. Remove the chicken and use white or dark meat or both. Can dump in noodles if you like or just use as is.
Also for the cough, Can mix cinnamon with sugar, or mix honey and lemon juice. These are all natural. And works great. Used it on all my kids and never had them to a doctor for colds etc.

Thanks Mary,,,Ya Dan, I had to sleep partially propped up with an extra pillow under the mattress and it does help. I’m not much for any alcohol for when I’m sick but I’ve been told it does work for some people. I like too cook all day and sit and smell it while its cooking, good stuff, so I’m off to the store right now to buy the goodies.

I am just getting over a cold that nagged on for 3-4 weeks and was a PITA. A coworker and one of her kids has pneumonia. A lot of crud going around right now.

There is actually some science behind this. Chicken broth has an enzyme that dissolved the cell membrane of some bacteria. Doesn’t affect virus, but is some help.

The chicken soup is good, about half the pot is gone already, sure hits the spot and its cheap and simple to make, good idea Mary!
