The teens killed by a homeowner after they broke into his Little Falls, Minn., home had prescription drugs from another break-in in the car they were driving on Thanksgiving Day, authorities say.

In a statement Wednesday, Nov. 28, Morrison County Sheriff Michel Wetzel said a search of a red Mitsubishi Eclipse seized after Haile Kifer and Nicholas Brady were shot and killed by Byron David Smith, authorities found prescription drugs and other items reported stolen from another Little Falls home.

Sheriff’s deputies approached Brady on the night of Nov. 21, the night before the shootings, after the car he was driving was reported by a homeowner as “suspiciously parked” on Hilton Road, the statement said.

Brady told deputies they had been driving around and the car ran out of gas and Kifer had left to get more. Deputies gave Brady a ride into Little Falls, and he left the car on Hilton Road.

Kifer’s family lives on Hilton Road. They declined to discuss the shooting earlier this week.

The spot on Hilton Road where the car was parked is near the home of Richard Johnson, who had been out of town for more than a week. Johnson had reported a break-in to police when he returned.

Deputies found six bottles of prescription drugs with Johnson’s name on them in the red Eclipse. They continue to investigate both break-ins and the shooting.

Kifer, 18, and Brady, 17, were shot repeatedly by Smith after they broke into his home on Thanksgiving Day and encountered
