The Great Hockey void

Almost no hockey talk going on anywhere. With the Wild locked out I guess that’s understandable. But, the Gophers took 3 out of 4 points in Wisconsin this weekend which would have normally been worth a mention.

Do Gopher Hockey fans think that going to the Big 10 next year will hurt or help them? I don’t see anyway losing the rivalry with North Dakota, Duluth, St. Cloud, Denver ect. can help.

To me it’s just another money grab with little thought for their fans.

There are no other reasons, are there?

On the plus side [for the Gophers] they lose the “rivalry” with tech, anchorage, Mankato, Nebraska, and bemidji. And they pick up Ohio state, Michigan and Michigan state.

Overall I hate it but I don’t think it will be all that bad.

Funny you brought that up Russ. I didn’t even know there was a void!

Not much about the Vikes either. Did they finally move?

I usually have a hard time getting into hockey this early in the season. It just doesn’t feel right until there is ice on the ponds and snow on the ground. The Gophers played in Minneapolis this weekend. It sure would have been nice to get all 4 points, but 3 is much better than a split. In February we are going to watch them play at the Kohl center and then again at Soldier Field.

Its tough to see the WCHA end and it will take some time to get some true rivalries developed. I still hope the Gophers get a chance to play the other MN teams a couple times per season.

The Big Ten hockey conference is a big buzz kill and will turn out to be a disaster.

This is too funny. We have a VIP coming into town in a couple weeks. The CEO suggested we get hockey tickets and take him to a game. I had to break the news to him that there is a lockout. Further proof not many care about hockey.

I’m still playing 3 nights a week in mens leagues. You all could grab a case a beer and watch us. Basically the same thing…

On a side note. Now would be a great time to support your local high school or college team to get your hockey fix.

Because of the NHL lockout, my company doesn’t have season tickets to offer to employees as incentives. Instead they are contemplating buying some single game tickets to the Timberwolves. Remember this is supposed to be a sales incetive. When my supervisor ran the idea by me, I immediately suggested Gopher hockey tickets but also suggested high school hockey or anything that doesn’t involve a ball and a court.

They once again are shooting themselves in the foot. Pat Kessler reality check: easily 80% of the country doesn’t care anything about pro hockey. They are losing the 6-8% that might be marginal.

Look at the Wild season ticket prices and the team they have put on the ice since inception…there are die hards that will continue to pay for dirt. If that’s your deal go for it…I’ll pass. So much more entertaining hockey in this state for free.

I don’t know how anyone can spend that kind of money either. Not that I am going to complain about it either, because I am content watching 95-98% of the Wild games each year at home. Thank God for HD tv. I know it is much better in person, but unless I get tickets for free, I am probably not going.

I heard on the radio this AM, that in Canada, they have WAY more pregnancies happening right now, than they usually do this time of year and attribute it to no NHL Hockey… and the sales of Sex toys, are through the roof too… I kid you not

    Heard that too.

I’m not going to change anything here once the NHL gets goinf again. Go to 1-2 games a year and watch 90% on tv.

I think we really have Bettman to thank for all of this. He is by far the worst commisioner in the history of pro sports. Forget what he has done to the fans and players, look what he has done to the owners.

    1. 2 lockouts under his belt costing onwers millions.
    2. Failed to stop ridulous contracts even after implimenting a salary cap.
    3. On the verge of losing 2 NHL seasons in one decade!
    4. Expanding hockey in several markets that no one believed would support it. They have all FAILED! And now he wants the other owners to support them!!!
    5. Lost ESPN television deal. How can you not air your sport on ESPN?

    Here’s a good read.

Bettmen needs to go, Fehr needs to go and some owners need to go. But even if they did, I guarantee you that the problems will not go away.

I believe it was a group of veterans at the end of their careers like Roenick that were instrumental in solving the last CBA? Sure wish Cullen was more of a superstar. We never see him play again if the season is lost.

A former player Mark Recchi did come out and kind of poke at the NHLPA.

NHLPA offered a formal proposal and the NHL is regrouping to respond this afternoon. Maybe this time Bettman responds with 3 scenarios written on one notebook page and Fehr storms out.
