I’ve been working on this for 2-3hrs for the last two day. trying again this morning and not much luck(first timer). drop down the LU and replaced the impeller was easy($40 impeller,$7 gasket). The problem is I don’t have reverse after reinstalled LU. I’ve tried all three shift position(N,R&F) and LU when in fine, but when i turn the propeller to check it only turn one direction. No reverse.
I am doing this by myself.
could you walk me through the process.
    ’91 Mercury 60hp outboard.

    Thanks.

Shift linkage is not back together properly. My Honda has a rod coupling to lengthen or shorten the it. Cant remember what a merc has. Popular motor. Someone on here will know.

    follow up.

I got it to shift F&R now. after watching that YouTube video I notice couple thing that I don’t have. 1-missing two nylon washer that go in before and after impeller.2-my outboard doesn’t have shift rod as shown in video.
How important the two nylon washer? I don’t know if it doesn’t have one or the mechanic at Universal Marine forgot to put them back in(had them replace the unit in fall 09).
after LU installed, I turn the propeller cw(as you stand behind it) it making clicking sound. when I turn ccw hard, it turn the fly wheel. Is this normal? I am temped to hook the ear muff and run it. good idea ? bad idea?

I think I would buy the washers and then adjust alittle more to see if you can tune it in. Good luck!! That’s all I can think of. I also have the click noise but adjusted my shifting lever to stop it. Like I said good luck!!

Get your model #/serial # off the transom clamp or a welch plug and go to Mercury’s website. They have exploded parts diagrams that will show you all the parts that are supposed to be there for your particular motor and how they go back together.

yes, its normal to click one way, and turn the flywheel the other way.
