So now that the soft water fishing is about over (duck season in full swing), I have time to work on some of my rods. I have a st. croix premier UL that is old, probably 15 years old. I love it, awesome rod.. but the cork is about done on it. There are huge pits and voids in it, some 1/2″ deep. I was wondering if there was anything I can do to restore it. Something to fill the voids then sand it out and coat it?

Take some cork (wine corks work well) and sand/file it so you have a pile of cork sawdust. Mix with a waterproof wood glue to form a thick paste. Slather this in your voids, let it dry, and sand it smooth.

This works quite well, you’ll really have a hard time noticing the repairs.

I’ve dealt with a company called Mud Hole, they sell all sorts of products for rod building including cork. They have these two products which might work for you:

    Cork Sealer

    Cork Filler

    Rootski

The cork filler from Mud Hole does not work very well, I’d avoid it. If you really love the rod, just cut the cork handle off, and re-epoxy on a new cork handle. The cork handle can be purchased from Mud Hole or Jann’s Netcraft, or any rod builder you know of. There are several of us here in the Rochester area.

NOTE!!! Do not hacksaw off the handle, by cutting off the cork I mean strip the old cork off the blank that extends through the handle. A jack knife will work well for this.

I think mud hole has 1 inch cork rings for replacemant put the cork ring up to the area you want to repair then with a razor blade carefully cut down to the blank the same width as the repalcement you will have to use a rasp to fit the hole around the shaft insert the repalcenment dry fit it then when your satisfied glue it in and sand to fit use the cork dust to fill in any small areas the people at mudhole can help too sand the whole handle and you will not even tell
