With a win today the Gopher football team becomes bowl eligible with a whopping 6 wins. Why go? Coach Kill has already made it well known he will schedule NOBODY tougher then Eden Prairie high school for a non-league game. Wouldn’t it be great if they qualify for the Toilet Bowl sponsored by Tidy Bowl and their opponent turns out to be North Carolina? Then what will coach Kill do? They certainly can’t play to win the game. They will need to lose and lose big to justify dumping North Carolina from next years schedule.

To think………..this guy gets paid a Big 10 coaches wage to run and hide. If you wanna beat up on D3 teams, can we at least pay you a D3 wage?

Oh, for the record the Gophers are 5-4 over-all and 1-4 in the Big Ten.

Wanna make us proud coach Kill? Decline the invitation and save us all the embarrassment.

I understand they have a pickup game scheduled with the Sister Mary’s school for unwed mothers, but they can’t spotted the 14 points they wanted.

Ya, you’d think with a school as large as the u of m, they’d do better.

First whether you like it or not…..this is not an unusual strategy….especially for rebuilding programs. It has been used successfully many times, including in a couple different stints for Bill Snyder at Kansas St. Second…..you NEVER decline a bowl bid. Any bowl is a huge recruiting tool….not to mention the extra practices and extra game for developing a young team.

Spoken like a coach. The extra practise does nothing. They have spring football and year long conditioning routines. Recruiting kids that can beat up D3 teams are not the players you want. Perhaps you can tell me what good Mason got out of going to bottom rung bowl games and getting beat up, other then his yearly “bowl bonus”.

Time to put the big boy pants on if you want to coach a big boy program.

Running and hiding from the likes of North Carolina is disgraceful no matter how you try and spin it.

Sorry I’m not a coach……its common sense from anyone who follows college football. It’s easier to sell 6-6 and a bowl game vs 2-8. This isn’t a big boy program if you haven’t noticed. It doesn’t do this program any good to schedule 4 higher class games and start 0-4. And yes an extra month of practice is a big deal whether you think so or not. I mean I’m not sure how you can argue otherwise. Especially with a freshman QB who has only a few starts under his belt.

OK, thats your position and I respect that.

My position is these are athletes that thrive on competition. As such you should challenge them to get better to compete, not reduce the task ahead of them. I would say that if you hire 2 salesman of the same ability and pushed, prodded, and helped one, vs just turning the other loose to fend for himself that after time the one you challenged and prodded will end up being better. Same with the football team. How can you expect them to compete with the better teams in the Big 10 if you practise against the worse teams you can find?

    OK, I’m done with this.

James keep the sports talk over at HSO where there are at least a few knowledgeable peeps on the subjects…

I don’t recall playing any Division 3 or 2 opponents as if coach Kill had anything to with schedules that are set up years invance anyway!

Tough issue on how to schedule to improve a struggling football program. I’m a Gopher alum so I feel the pain. My daughter is at Mizzou where they just went into the SEC this year (with several top tier teams). Definitely higher caliber competition, but the hope is to raise the bar for the program and hopefully the better recruits come over time. Tough challenge…

So, Mizzou goes from a weaker conference (usually above .500) to being lucky if they can get to .500. They got the snot kicked out of them by Bama, Auburn, Georgia, etc… If they hadn’t scheduled “patsies” to begin the season, they wouldn’t be in any consideration to go to a bowl game.

Kind of the same situation as the Gophers so I understand Jerry’s logic. I guess the only thing I would like to see Minnesota do is to schedule the easier teams from around the region instead of far away. Would like to see more North Dakota games, Northern Illinois/Iowa, Iowa State (not a patsy but maybe potential rivalry), and less of the Southeast Louisiana Tech Institute stuff …

It’s kind of like taking a younger dog to the game farm… you need to build his confidence

Northern Illinois is just a few votes shy of the top 25 right now.
Iowa State, doesn’t have any votes. (doesn’t mean there not a good team though)

That would be in the AP rankings.

If they won’t schedule N. Carolina, why schedule a much, much better team?

“1-4 in the Big 10”??? Maybe I missed something, did Purdue move to the ACC?

Did you expect Jerry Kill to turn the team around with a single recruiting class? It takes better athletes. I go to every home game and can tell you he has put a far better team on the field than we have seen since Mason. He is getting better athletes and you can see improvement in them each week.

Regarding the non-conf schedule, look at who WI played, or even Alabama.

I hardly get embarrassed by anything a college does, especially a sports program. They represent the university, not the state and certainly not me

Amen to that! Wisconsin has had a big time tendency to schedule a bunch of patsies. This years pre-season opponents were probably the toughest we scheduled in a long time.

Big time programs that have any intention of someday playing in a national championship game will have to change this in the very near future. It’s either that or they won’t get to the national championship game even if they do go undefeated.

    here’s one!

    OLE’S MINNESOTA FIRE INSURANCE

A man and his wife moved back home to Minnesota from Arizona .
The wife had a wooden leg and to insure it in Arizona was

    $2,000.00 a year!!!

When they arrived in Minnesota , they went to an Insurance agency

to see how much it would cost to insure the wooden leg. The agent

looked it up on the computer and said to the couple, “$39.00.”

The husband was shocked and asked why it was so cheap here in

Minnesota to insure, because it cost him $2,000.00 in Arizona !!!

The agent turned his computer screen to the couple and said, “Well,

here it is on the screen, it says: Any wooden structure, with a

sprinkler system over it, is $39.00.”

I always did find the Minnesota logic far superior to most others.
