what wrong with my spinning reels

I thought my Pflueger president is bad and now my brand new Shimano Sahara did the same thing.
With my Pflueger reel it would spin backward often when the rod loaded. when i reel in big fish (bass&walleye)let go my hand of the handle or to loosen the drag nob it would spin backward. When it get snacked, I did the quick pop with the rod or when I did the bow thing, it spin backward. When I try to spin it backward with the handle it wouldn’t(lock).
Taking my brand new Shahara out on Wednesday and it did the same thing. I’m reeling in a giant sheep head, took my hand of the handle to grab the net the reel start spinning backward. I have to reel and pause reel pause to make sure it didn’t spin backward.
Any idea why or what causing this?

your anti reverse clutch is failing. same thing happened to me after fishing bass in heavy weeds with 20lb braid i guess it was just to much stress for the clutch.

I’ve never had that happen before. I have only stradics. Maybe for heavier use you need to step up to a better reel and that hopefully cure the issue. I just caught a 35lbs flathead with a 2500 and it was flawless.

I agree, same happened to me. Had 2 of my Shimano’s repaired this year. They may be 8 years old or newer. Glens Reel and Rod repair told me it is not an uncommon item for both of the brands to have happen. Mine are Symetres.

Same thing here, symetre, seems more common in colder temps, should be an easy fix. Sure is a bummer when you have a fish on the other end though.

If the shimano is new send it in or take it in. Should be covered under warranty right?

You can try cleaning the anti reverse assembly, but they’re pretty finicky. You basically need to make sure there is zero grease oil in them, especially when cold. Remington’s Remlube works well for me to clean them out, after which I wipe out as much of the oil as possible. Note that this problem gets worse in colder weather.

I had that happen with 2 Sahara’s this summer. It confused me because they would spin free and then sometimes work so I was thinking of something I was doing to make it happen and couldn’t think of anything.

Any chance you are using braided line for the 1st time? That’s what popped into my head when I saw your post title.

Sounds different but thought I’d ask…………

I just noticed one of my Presidents doing this last weekend. For some reason my fireline wasn’t lining up right on the roller causing the bail to pop open when setting hooks.

I have several presidents, and one now has this issue. The anti reverse won’t work at all under any kind of load. I have 4 presidents and this is the first issue I’ve ever had. I noticed it for the first time at the freeze your butt this spring. The cold water issue seems to hold water.

Sometimes if you flip the switch in the front of the reel back and forth a few times it will help. Some of them are packed so full of grease that it can slip. Heck half of them are just graphite on graphite now a days, they wear out quick. My okumas were bad about that.

If flipping the switch back and forth a dozen or so times doesnt help any, take her apart and wipe all the dang grease off that little lever that engages the anti-reverse. You just need a tiny bit, some have a dollop of it on there.

Have had this happen to 2 out of 3 of my Presidents, and both of my Stradics. I figure it’s part of the normal wear and tear, if you use your drag to fight big fish, as opposed to back reeling. I never use the backreeling method. Have had the Stradics repaired, and now looking to get the Presidents fixed too.
