We went up to Cabela’s last night to get some of the new wolf decoys for our hunt. They were out of both the Red Riding Hood and the Three little pigs models.

That made me chuckle out loud.
What about the birthing deer decoys?
October 18, 2012 at 12:48 pm #1105958I think guys with a wolf tag have changed their hunting strategy from deer to wolf
October 18, 2012 at 1:47 pm #1105977…or the poodle, housecat, small child or icefisherman on a bucket model?
October 18, 2012 at 2:08 pm #1105984I just bought a Pug, a Pomeranian and a deer fawn, nothing like live decoys!
October 18, 2012 at 2:50 pm #1105999On the serious side, they have those rabbit squeal calls that are deadly for predators.
Those things seem to work mighty well on TV at least, they bring’em in within easy range of a varmint rifle that is well scoped.
Wolves are deadly hunters, but as they saying goes we all gotta eat. Some places the deer are over running the country side.
Wolves kinda balance the herds a bit I think, probably eat a lot of younger, small ones for sure.
In our area seems to have a lot of ‘otes in, not seen any wolves.
We do have wild turkeys that I hear and see for time to time.Roger

You knucklehead, I would have given you mine for free.October 18, 2012 at 4:24 pm #1097839Haha.
Had I drawn a tag, my plan was utilize calling with a decoy, likely one of the shaking rabbit types. I figure this first year they won’t be too educated yet. I guess we’ll see what the success rate is for the 6300 hunters who drew tags.
October 18, 2012 at 4:47 pm #1106042Bret Clark is reporting on FB 4 wolves have been taken so far in WI.
October 18, 2012 at 5:03 pm #1106049Don’t quote me, but I believe out west they are seeing less than 10% success rates and have had to increase the # of tags to help bring the wolf numbers back in check.
October 18, 2012 at 5:16 pm #1106052With the “natural selection” hunt, we are going to week out the wreckless ones and leave the stealthy ones to breed. Soon animals will start disappearing without a trace and wolves will become mythic like the Sasquatch.

Of the 6000 licenses given out, I bet half the people don’t even own a gun. All the anti groups were spreading the word and having all of their members buy licensee and apply for the wolf tag so less wolves get shot.
October 18, 2012 at 7:13 pm #1106094From the DNR’s site:
Quote:
Eligibility
All applicants must present proof of a previous or current hunting or trapping license in order to apply. All applicants born after Dec. 31, 1979, must have a valid Firearms Safety Certificate prior to purchasing a license, unless they are a Minnesota resident younger than 13 and have not had their small game hunting privilege suspended. Persons born after Dec. 31, 1989, who have not been issued a trapping license in a previous license year, may not obtain a wolf trapping license without a trapper education certificate.
So, we may have fooled the tree hugger this year, but next year they’ll be more prepared. Out west, they went to unlimited applicants on many of the wolf and cougar tags. Still have harvest targets, but they sell tons more tags. We’ll get there eventually.
desperadoPosts: 3010October 18, 2012 at 7:45 pm #1106100Don’t huggers like to chain themselves to a tree in order to save that tree from the evil loggers?
Sounds like a great place to set up a stand; wouldn’t a hugger chained to a tree probably make for good wolf bait ?
October 18, 2012 at 8:41 pm #1106117Great Plan, let me know if you know of any volunteers that I could use on my hunt. Tell them its a social event with free cheese and wine while we wait.
October 18, 2012 at 10:17 pm #1106132This should boost everyone’s enthusiasm for wolf hunting. From a report on Montana’s first wold hunt in 2009
“Barely one-third of 1 percent of Montana’s 19,000 wolf tag buyers killed a wolf that year. In Idaho, the success rate for its wolf hunt was just 1 percent. Moore said about 20,000 of the state’s 30,000 tag buyers actually tried to hunt wolves that year. “wkwPosts: 730October 18, 2012 at 10:27 pm #1106133Quote:

According to the people I deal with in No. Mn., they’ll be lucky to do that good here.
WKWOctober 18, 2012 at 11:37 pm #1106147Anyone hear anything about the Anti’s buying up tags so hunters didn’t get them?

So what? they just have to take a course and buy a hunting license. I did it in a weekend at 12 years of age, not like they cant figure out how to do it. Nothing to fool them. Anybody from any state could have applied if they took the safety test and bought a hunting license.

If they have that much ambition and dedication, then I applaud them. But something tells me they aren’t going to give up a weekend of bong hits and frisbee golf to do it.October 19, 2012 at 3:22 am #1106191Quote:

Hahaha I like you Pug
October 19, 2012 at 12:36 pm #1106226The antis are not finished. They have an appeal to MN supreme court and will continue fight against wolf hunting in the great lakes region.

My thoughts exactly, don’t forget about sitting around the fire in their mumu’s singing koomboya braiding each other’s hair.

A well rounded individual can enjoy a campfire, bong hit, a round of frisbee golf, a few hours hunting and a little fishing all in one weekend. I think.
October 19, 2012 at 5:19 pm #1106334I will drive the bus for any group of anti’s that want to buy license. It only will help the DNR coffers.Number of license will be determined by the success rate. Non use license will only create more opportunities the following years.
What are the wall street tent protesters doing these days? Maybe we can get them signed up.
