I agree with BK. There’s no reason to leave the lower unit dry all winter. Fill it back up with lower unit grease and put the drain screw back in right away so she’s good to go in the spring.

Does anyone leave the grease in if it looks the same as when you last filled it ?

    Your results may vary.

I always change mine because of the use.

Now if I only used it a few times per year, I would consider it, keeping in mind I can’t see the metal shavings and other impurities in the grease.

    The stuff is cheap.

I have a couple times. My neighbor just changed his for the first time in 10 years on his pontoon. If you pull the lower drain and it comes out clear oil then its likely fine.

Why did he take the time to change it now? Selling it?

If you don’t change your lower unit lube in the fall, at least drain it and then you just have to remember to put the screws and lube back in, come spring. Don’t chance any water in there through the winter months

My Eastern European ability to see bad [censored] before it happens just went off. Danger! Danger!

I can see absolutely no advantage in leaving the unit empty during the winter. And all kinds of huge disadvantages. The #1 being forgetting to fill it in the spring and toasting your lower unit.

Only you can prevent bad [censored] from happening. Drain and fill at the same time and everybody stays happy.

Also, one more point: Just so we don’t confuse anyone, you do NOT put “grease” in a lower unit. You put gear oil in a lower unit.
