Well this year I get to go to Iowa for the slug season and I need a little help picking out a barrel for my 870. I’m a north woods rifle hunter and was told my .270 is off limits for Iowa deer So my question is who makes the best not ridiculously priced 12ga slug barrel for a Remington 870 express?
    Thanks for any help

I forgot I’d like a cantilever scope mount as well.

Remington and Mossberg make ones that are good. I see Walmart has a combo with a scope for $184

Know of any friends that have a Remington 20 gaugethey’d borrow you? I would prefer that any day over a 12 gauge.

Get a 24 inch Hastings barrel and put a leupold vx1 2-7×32 scope on it and you will have a weapon deadly out past 150 yds. Be sure to test different brands of slugs as some shoot better than others if each situation.

    My two cents.

I agree about the Hastings barrel. Call Froyum Sports near Zumbrota to see what they have on hand 507-824-2372. You’ll need to buy the slugs for rifled barrels too and not the “rifled” less expensive slugs.

X2. Make sure its the shotgun model Leupold. Rifle models do not hold up being the shock is totally different on a shotgun. Hornady SST slugs.

Guys, here in Iowa most of my shots are around 40 to 50 yards. I’ve only had one that went about 80. I shoot 2 to 3 deer a year on opening day.

Buy one from Rem or shoot out of your plain barrel with IC choke. All the guys I know that slug hunt just use their smooth barrels with the IC choke in. My buddy took a doe last year at 80 yards with his SX3 and IC choke. She just fell over dead. 3″ win slugs.

Iowa is mostly timber hunting, you dont need a scope or anything fancy. Most shots are 30-50 yards. We have more deer than MN does mosquitos.

Its all preference. A lot of guys fish with cheap rod/reel combos they got at a big box store some people fish with $200 reels and $200 rods. I’m sure more fish have been caught using cheap setups. I am more confident, for good reasons, using a rifled barrel and a good scope.

This combo can’t be beat with a 2 3/4″, 3/4oz Federal Barnes Expander, tipped.

Took a doe at 220 yards, confirmed with a range finder. I’m zeroed in at 150 yards, holding approximate 2-3 MOA.

All you guys keep thinking of those long shots of glory!
I’ll take my deer home and you will still be looking through your scope.
I again will tell you most all your shots here in Iowa are 50 yards +/- 20.

But whale, what do I know, I’m just a son of a plumber whom raised his kids with a 6th grade edgercation.

Yep, Barnes Expanders is what I shoot. Expensive but very accurate in my shotgun.

Yup. A scope is going to screw you up when that deer walks by you at 25-30 yards and all you see is brown in the scope. Not to mention if you go opening day you wont be patterning any deer. There will be so many guys out driving deer that they will be running all day.
