Cruise control lost when trailer hooked up

When I hook my boat up to my truck the right turn signal and cruise control stop working; the left turn signal continues to work fine. Once I unhooked the trailer, cruise control and right turn signal once again work fine. The vehicle I had before this truck had no issues with the trailer lights.

Any ideas what would cause this? This is happening on an ’03 Chevy Silverado.

Sounds like the plug on the truck is wired wrong with probably the right turn signal and brake light wires crossed up.

Check fuses under the hood. Next check your wires and make sure they arent pinched or frayed. Had a similar problem and it turned out the wires were pinched to the point two frayed and touched each other.

replace trailer bulbs.. or pull them clean and reinstall// the cruse not working is a dead give away of the problem.. there is corrosion between the two contacts on the bulbs that gives feed back threw the tail light feed thus making cruse kick off..

    easy fix!!!

    You have a fuse issue…..

Easy to fix and it is caused by a short in your trailer lights. Check the owners manual for the schematic.

We can all agree that it is between the trailer lights and the fuse box. Its either at one of the two ends, or in the middle. Your task is to find it. Good luck.

Your truck probably has separate fuses for trailer lights, so start there. If they all check out, inspect the lights. If that checks out check the wiring.

I had the same problem with my 03 Silverado and Shorlandr trailer. What is happening is your right turn signal is some how shorting out with your brake wire. That is what causes the cruise not to work. Check the bulbs and contacts in your light assembly. Also check to see which lights work if you turn your headlights on and you try using your turn signals.

This is good news. The only explanation I could find online was that Chevy uses a too small gauge of wire in a brake harness under the console. Over time it heats up too much and causes the wire to weaken which requires replacement. Probably easy enough to fix but I was hoping for some other ideas so thanks.

Do you guys tow your boats with the Cruise activated?

When I’m on long flat stretches I will. If it is hilly or in high traffic areas I won’t.

and … do you use your right turn signal when towing your boat?

I could see a real easy solution to the original question developing here.
