A prime St Croix walleye rod got caught in some wiring in my rod box. The tip broke off. Can I take it to a Scheels or Gander and get a new one and still have a clear conscious walking out?

Take it back, if your to squish mail it in. Most rod returns let you saw it into pieces.
Bought it earlier this year, due to the type of fishing trips I have been making I haven’t even used it more than twice. With the real Wisconsin Opener coming Saturday its time to “break” this rod out – really, no pun intended
Maybe you could put a tip on it and consider it a M action now instead of ML?

Its a MXF – Medium fast already – or was….
Now its an MNSFX. (medium not so fast action)
Seriously. If you care, and it sounds like you do, call St Croix and tell them the story. They may tell you to send it in and your conscience is clear. Or take to store and tell them. I think their is a good chance you get a new rod. Otherwise MNFSX.
I slammed two in the car door this year , broke the tips, and sent them back in no questions; and I don’t feel any remorse considering how much I had to pay for them to begin with.

Absolutely somebody needs to watch out for me, I spend more money on them then I do on my girlfriend.
I’m not a fan of screwing over any business. The owners of the businesses have families to feed also. Why should they pay for your mistake? Yeah it sucks that it happened, but it wasnt the companies fault so why should you take money out of their pocket for your accident.
Call st. croix and send it in. Going to cost you $10 shipping to them, plus $20 check, plus 40% of the retail price of the rod… unless they are nice and dont charge you the replacement fee. Or if you dont mind a shorter rod, they will sell you a replacement tip to put on it.
Be a man and do the right thing, it will make you feel good.
It’s a ten dollar rod blank add ten more for the seat and eyes and some labor . Turn it in they want you to be happy so you will by more !

I’m not sure where you got that. The cheapest st. croix blank is $50, the reel seat st. croix uses is about $15, then the fuji guides they use are $25 minimum.
There is no way st. croix is turning out rods for $20. Its not as simple as just making some cheap stuff, putting it together and making a huge profit like some people think. They make VERY LITTLE profit on each one sold to retailers. On a $100 rod, st. croix makes about $3.00 profit. On the $400 rods they make about $15.00 each. So if you return a $400 rod that you broke they are out $385. Yeah they make a ton a day and can probably afford to replace it without thinking twice. But do you really think it is right for them to take money out of their pockets to pay for your accident?
I’m all for returning a defective product, that is on the mfg and they should own up to their mistakes. But to return a rod you broke and LIE about it? I thought people were better than that.
Call them and tell them what happened, they will help you out. Its better than lying.
They advertise their warranty and their policies have me sold. I am loyal customer because I’ve had several rods replaced over the last 20 years. I must own a dozen St Croix rods and for the money, I will own a dozen more.
Seriously, don’t kid yourself. The guys in the warranty dept know what happened to each rod.
When we toured the facility, they showed us some of the rod that came in for warranty. I don’t remember specifically each case, but the stories didn’t match up to the damage to the rod. How they handled each one escapes me as well.
They’ve been doing this for a long long time.
Depending on the rod, it will cost you either 70.00 or 95.00 to replace the rod and have a clear conscious based on their warranty/service policy. You could try returning it to Scheels. They might take it back. They shouldn’t.
