I’m looking for a game farm in the east north or south metro with some good grass fields to chase some pheasants at. There was a post here 1-2 years ago but I couldn’t seem to find it. The wife doesn’t seem to be able to get out as much as she used to (I still seem to find the time though) and I’d like to take her out and let her shoot a few birds as well as give the dogs a warm up. Looking for somewhere with decent priced birds and good fields according others experiences and not just an add. Thanks for the input.

Try Traxlers, had a good time there 2 years ago.
Traxlers Web PageIf you are thinking of the Fall trolling on Mille Lacs you might also look into Mille Lacs hunting Lodge, never been there but just learned of it recently.
ML Hunting LodgeSeptember 12, 2012 at 10:33 pm #1098451If you have to hit the Twin Cities area I cannot offer any advice. i refuse to patronize those places as they charge for scratch birds that they have already been paid for.
Bader’s Pheasant Run out of Federal Dam, MN is an excellent place run by excellent people. For anyone interested Deb and Wade run an awesome family outfit with ten or eleven 12+ acre fields. My dad usually hits them up about twenty times a year. We eat a lot of pheasants.
September 13, 2012 at 12:04 am #1098481So can you go somewhere, buy 1 bird release and get 15 birds ?
Kinda sounds like you get what you pay for

I don’t know anywhere that doesn’t have a 6 bird minimum (or something like that). However yes, if I buy 10 and shoot 11 I’ll be d*#med if I am going to pay for a previously bought bird.
There are some places that do have scratch hunts however. Just pay to go “clean up” the fields. Paying for those scratch birds makes perfect sense.
September 13, 2012 at 12:08 am #1098484Check with Oakwood Game Farm in Princeton Mn. They supply like 90% of the birds to these preserves. They should be able to give you a recommendation.

Have you gone to Game Unlimited just outside of Hudson? I’ve got lots of friends that belong out there.September 13, 2012 at 12:40 am #1098498I guess cleaned and frozen is what they hand me at the end of the day. If I pay for 6 and shoot 20, I expect to pay for that service for 20. That’s just me. I guess a person can surely quit, after shooting their 10 they paid for and not have to feel bad or taken advantage of at all.
September 13, 2012 at 12:46 am #1098502If you order 6 and shoot 20 then you are better than anyone I have ever shot with or heard of. We can usually find 1 or perhaps 2 above and beyond 10. However that is unusual.
Do you suppose the game preserve gave the previous client any money back for the birds they didn’t harvest?
Now, processing after the hunt. Heck yeah you should pay for that service on each bird processed.
September 13, 2012 at 12:53 am #1098503Hey Kirk, I have not, do you need to be a member to shoot live birds there?

Wade, most game farms are required by the DNR to release 125% of purchased birds every time. So if you order 10 birds they have to put out 13 birds, when you take your ten they are out the cost of 3 birds.. nobody payed for them. Its just the nature of the business, helps get some wild birds around. But if you shoot those extra 3 birds then you gotta pay for them, nobody else did.
I have only been to one place that did not charge me for extra birds, and it was right after a 100 bird shoot and the guys from chicago (business top dogs) got 15 out of 100. The guy running it said we are welcome to come hunt, but he wouldnt feel right putting more birds out (was the last week of the preserve season). He told us to go ahead and pay for our limit (5 birds each) and take home what we can get at no extra charge since he already made a killing off those chicago guys. All 3 of us ran out of shells and didnt even walk 1/4th of the field. We were cleaning birds for hours.
September 13, 2012 at 8:44 am #1098543Coyland creek in Frederic wi is a great place to hunt birds. Give them a look you won’t be disappointed.

Huh, interesting. I did not know that. I wonder if that applies to northern MN where pheasants have basically 0 habitat. Perhaps that is why Bader’s doesn’t charge for scratch.
That helps explain it, thanks. I still will patronize Bader’s and drive past the southern preserves just on principle.

September 13, 2012 at 12:14 pm #1098572Mike,
I talked to one buddy that shoots sporting clays out there. He said you don’t need to be a member to shoot sporting clays. He thought it cost about 20.00. You do have to be a member to shoot live birds or be with a member to shoot birds. He thought it was less than 300.00 to become a member. The cool thing about being a member is being able to bow hunt out there and it also gets you access to fish out there. Rumor has it ice fishing for crappies and sunnies can be very good. Here is the number if you want to check on the membership. 715-246-5475
