We’ve seen plenty of tracks and had a few sightings on the farm from a distance, but these were the first good trail camera pictures we’ve gotten.

These were passed on from a friend up in Malmo and were taken not more than a mile from Malmo and only a few hundred yards from Hwy 18, no more than a stone throw from lake cabin central on East shore of Mille Lacs.

You guys are just seeing them down there? Had a couple come past me on opener about 5 or 6 years ago north of glen. Do you remember the one that got strung up on the road sign north of Aitkin on HWY 169 about 20 years ago. They have been around for a while.

    Cool pictures.

We’ve had them around for quite a while but these are the first good pictures I’ve seen from the area.

There are actually a lot more wolves around than people realize. Luckily there aren’t as many in the Malmo area as in the remote woods farther to the NE. A couple years ago I was talking to someone who farms a couple miles from the intersection of Hwy 2 and Hwy 65 who had some livestock killed and brought in a federal trapper. I’m not sure if it was an exageration, but he claimed they trapped over 30 wolves on his property alone

Now I just need to draw a tag! I’ll be hunting just south of you Will where the landowner has lots of wolf pics.

Got my application in for a tag. Can’t wait, but getting one during deer season will be more luck than anything, at least where we hunt in Pine County. Lots of weekend warriors will make sure the wolves don’t move unless they have to.

Totally agree with what someone else posted, there are vastly more wolves out there than have been “officially” estimated. This new hunting season won’t make the slightest dent in the population and my guess is that success rates will be below 10%.

Just curious… How can you tell that is a wolf and not a coyote? I’ve never seen either in real life. Without a frame of reference in that pic, I couldn’t say if that dog was 30 pounds or 75.

I was just thinking the same thing! Cant tell if that is a dog in some saplings or a wolf in some bigger saplings. First impression was coyote, but I cant really get the size from the background. To me, it doesnt look big enough to be a wolf.

Look at the leg length compared to snout. Yotes don’t have the long legs.

The main difference is size and based on familiarity with our trail cameras this is much bigger than a ‘yote. The other two things that give it away as a wolf are that it has much longer legs and a bigger head in relation to the rest of its body. Alhtough smaller, coyotes actually have a stockier build while wolves are lanky with long legs and a larger head.

No mistaking that one. As mentioned, being familiar with their head and body structure.larger/longer head and larger legs

Someone sent me this e-mail and it is applicable to this topic.
I’m not fact-checking it but it is funny.

“This old fellow in the big cowboy hat got a standing ovation.

The Sierra Club and the U S. Forest Service were presenting an alternative to the Wyoming ranchers for controlling the coyote population.

It seems that after years of the ranchers using the tried and true method of shooting or trapping the predators, the Sierra Club had a “more humane” solution to this issue.

What they were proposing was for the animals to be captured alive. The males would then be castrated and let loose again.

This was ACTUALLY proposed by the Sierra Club and by the U. S. Forest Service.

All of the ranchers thought about this amazing idea for a couple of minutes.

Finally an old fellow wearing a big cowboy hat in the back of the conference room stood up, tipped his hat back and said, “Son, I don’t think you understand our problem here. These coyotes ain’t F’n our sheep; they’re eatin’ ’em!”

The meeting never really got back to order.”
