Why do bass pro’s not use a net?

I have been patiently waiting for the return of IDO tv episodes but in the mean time I have been passing the time by watching a lot of The Bassmasters. My question is why don’t they use nets when landing fish?

I know I don’t typically get the net out for rough fish either but if there is $$$ on the line I suppose I’d want it in the boat.

I believe some of those tournaments nets are NOT allowed, when they are allowed you will see one if not two nets per boat.

Wouldn’t the net slow them down. Anytime the lure isn’t in the water is time wasted.

When we catch a small cat (4/5 pounds) we “bass” them into the boat.

It’s bass fishing, they wanted to make at least some aspect of it challenging.

Part of it is to eliminate the problems with having the co-angler missing the fish or knocking it off with the net. Sometimes I’ve had a really big fish on and could have used some assistance and the co-angler has refused, just because they didn’t want any part in it.

The no-net thing is bad policy. Instead the fish are slammed into the deck, rolled around on the carpet, flop in to the tight spaces. They get more beat-up without a net. Gullet hooked fish are the worst to handle w/o a net.

Because there is nothing more exciting than watching Mike Iaconelli scoop up a bass by the belly.

Becasue the callous they develop on their thumbs from lipping them comes in handy when they are home alone.

He actually catches fish? I’m usually too busy yelling at him to put a bend in his hat bill and put it on straight to notice how he handles fish.

I kinda figured the way they yank them fish in, they’d use a first baseman’s mitt…??

Believe it or not – this was one of the reasons for it. Ray Scott felt that it took more skill to land a fish by “hand” rather than by net….

Second – it was believed that the calibur of nets back then were removing the slime coat from the fish and was also a factor in banning nets…

Unfortunately now you have the same problem with boat carpets and fish flopping all over….however most of that is for television…

I can tell you this from being at the BASS conservation summit at last years Classic, there is talk of bringing nets back to aid in fish care….Today’s nets are much better than the old nylon beasts from grandpa’s time…

I think the elites should bring back nets, maybe have them all use a certain approved rubber coated kind.

Anyone who is familiar with the elites would know that Brandon Palaniuk would appreciate it.

To me thumbing bass is so engrained in the culture that the first time I saw a bass pro use one, it was one of the oddest things I have seen watching a pro bass fisherman.

I think nets should be brought into BASS, even though it feels weird saying it because I feel like I am going against my own sacred beliefs.

I think nets should be brought back too but you must realize as well that flipping a fish that’s under 3.5lbs is just a lot easier and you lose the risk of knocking it off with the net. When your boat is that low to the water it’s just 10x easier to just flip em in.
