The former president of Shell oil company has written a book called, Why we hate oil companies. It details alot of reasons why oil prices are so high, some I don’t believe and beside the point right now, but he said, and I quote, theres more oil in the ground within America’s borders then we will ever use.

He said hes a registered Democrat and also said the last 6 presidents have swept under the table any future explorational drilling that would reduce prices, every one of them. He said theres more then enough crude in the ground to last America many many years. If this is the case then why hasen’t any of the past presidents pushed Explorational drilling harder, contrary to the past what we have been told and lead to believe. I personaly don’t believe its from any of the groups that push non-pollution and green energy. I think its something deeper then that and is hush hush. Anyone think it may be the popular vote coming from the voters because they want to keep thier jobs, and also to keep prices high, useing the pollution and the supply and demand issue as a reason to keep prices high. I personally think its more then what meets the eye. What do you guys think.

Better get my 2 cents in here quik before this gets locked.

To me when you have institutions (Republicans, Democrats, oil companies, health care companies and the list goes on) there are just to many agendas going on. When the parties are telling the canidates when and what they can believe in things are screwed up. When you need to spend over ONE BILLION DOLLARS to elected you think there aren’t agenda’s and paybacks involved?

    How about we try this………….

60 days prior to the election you announce your canidacy.
You are allowed 3 30 second TV ads per week on the 4 national stations.

You can make 6 televised debates to be broadcast bythe 4 major networks.

“By the people, for the people.”

The people have had very little involement in government for some time now. Today it’s who can afford to run who will be elected.

As for the oil thing…………..big government, big oil.

And I’d add to this that the candidate cannot mention an opponent in any way and must speak only of what he wants to achieve while in office. Violating any of these rules gets him bounced out of politics for 10 years.

Lets say there is that much oil in between our boarders. We must ask ourselves how far are we willing to go to retrieve this oil? Take the shale oil reserves where the majority of oil is located. In order to get to this oil the environment will suffer greatly from blowing mountain tops off and depleting water reserves . In many cases the technology is not there yet to make it cost effective to retrieve. Also, where technology exist to retrieve this oil the price of crude on the international market must remain high in order to make it economically viable. So gas or crude oil prices will not go down if we tap into the talked about oil reserves.

Are we willing to destroy our environment just to save a few bucks when alternative sources of energy are progressing at faster rate than expected?

Term limits at all levels of govt, 2 terms and you are out, and you cannot run for another office while in office, you have to finish the job you were elected for first. This will require a constitutional amendment of course.

Step 2, a true balanced budget. If you cannot balance the budget, elections are held in 8 weeks for all politicians at the level of governemnt who cannot get the job done. Again, this will take a constitutional amendment.

    Hey, I can dream…

We all want lower oil prices but nobody wants to be put out to achieve them. We all complain about the cost yet when given alternatives we all cry foul – “not in my backyard!” Oil exploration and drilling has a significant environmental impact and there are some very powerful conservation groups lobbying to save those resources from exploitation. Suppose they found a giant lake of oil under Mille Lacs or Green Bay. Do you suppose oil derricks would be welcomed with open arms if it would knock gas prices down 25 cents a gallon?

Heres what gets me is I’ve heard we have enough oil thats already drilled and capped and paying royalties on it to the people who own the land, too last America 100 yrs. without any future drilling. 100 years from now we’ll be useing something else to power autos and semi’s, probably hydrogen, so why not use the oil we have a plentiful supply of right now. Theres still going to be oil in the ground and by then it will be alot easier with better technology to get it out. It would take an awful lot of talking to convince me the price were all paying now is justified by anything.

Are you talking about some sort of nationalizing of the oil. Right now any oil drilled in between our boarders goes to the world market as a commodity and will not affect the global market price as it is placed as lump total with the rest of the oil drilled around the world.
Nationalizing oil will never happen in a free market capitalistic system as we got.

No matter how much we drill and try to effect the price of oil other entities like OPEC and others will slow their production to offset any glut in the supply in order to keep the global price where they want it. So it does not matter how much oil we have. To offset anything OPEC and others do we would have to invest so much money and resources to produce enough oil it just wouldn’t be cost effective and cost more in the long run.

Its a Global Market and to many big players are at the helm.
As we keep oil such an important commodity we are held ransom to the free market. Any of these politicians that claim they can effect the price of oil are off their rocker and are playing to what people want to hear.

Best way to control the price of oil as I see it is ween ourselves off it and the price goes down( we have seen it when oil first hit $4 and consumption went down and the price fallowed but not as fast as it went up) or Make an agreement between the countries of North America and nationalize, extreme yes and it will never happen.

The good news is Hydrogen fuel technology is proceeding at a fast pace. Natural gas technology is keeping pace. With investment into these technologies and with the use of crude oil we will have a better portfolio to keep the ransom of oil at bay. However we can not keep putting all our efforts into oil and disregard the other 2 as major players. For that matter wind and solar will help also.

The system we have now sucks but if we want to keep free markets and investments were stuck with it.

Just some thoughts in my head and not meant to sound like a lecture or against oil. I need oil for my boat though if Toro can make a hydrogen powered lawnmower I look forward to a hydrogen powered boat motor.

I agree Riverweed for the most part and everything you have just said is the rule of thumb. What Id like to see is sell our oil on the world market and slowly reduce the price. If Opec slowed thier production down to try to offset anything eventually they would have to give in. Thier country runs 100% on oil revenues and eventually the public there would start too feel the pinch of less revenues coming to thier coutry. I really don’t think they could play that game for more then a couple years. If you would take 1/8th of thier revenues thier building growth would slow and would be felt country wide along with the rest of opec. It would be like a gas war to bring down prices,,,but the important question is will it ever happen. There are a few things that we are benifiting from thought. Higher milage transportation, cleaner air and less pollution. Its too bad we can’t have lower prices and keep doing what were doing to improve whats been improved, Like you I don’t think that may happen,,,but who knows. I know with stricter pollution rules the trout and salmon have come back to some of the rivers on the west coast I do think theres something going on behind the cutains though. 15 to 20 years ago the state of Iowa had many propane runs autos and vans here, it was not uncommon to see quite a few of them. What happened to them because thier not around anymore. Propane is still a cheaper fuel so why no vehicles running on them.
