Mauer on waivers

All players get put on waivers. If claimed the teams can either let the player and his contract go, or pull the player back and try to work a trade. In Bostons case they wanted rid of Beckett & Crawford so bad they were willing to let Gonzolas go also. BTW, they also cleared over $250 million in salary. From what I understand it’s standard operating prosedure in Baseball.
August 29, 2012 at 12:55 pm #1095498I do not think anything will happen. He has a full no trade clause in his contract.

August 29, 2012 at 1:21 pm #1095502I would not be surprised if he got claimed. After all he is one of the top over-all players in the game. Any team claiming him would need to be able to afford the contract should Mauer and the Twins agree to let him go. However, say a play-off style team like Tampa claimed him. They would want the Twins to eat a large portion of the contract remaining. Joe may want to go there, it’s a chance to play with a very good team. So, he may agree, the Twins may want the salary dump, Tampa wants the player. So yes I can see a claim happening. However I don’t see the Twins eating enough of the contract to make that happen.
I would like to know if the Dodgers put in a claim on Morneau and what happened there.
This why I love baseball, always something going on even if your team stinks!!
August 29, 2012 at 2:32 pm #1095524As a Twins fan, this is dissappointing. I remember Mauer wanted an “out” clause when he was in negotiations with his contract, I wonder if he will excercise it down the road and the Twins get nothing. What is more concerning, is the fact that the Twins refuse to throw some money at 1 pitcher. This move tells me they are looking at every other way to acquire pitching instead of doing the easy route and offer it up to a free agent. Mauer puts a lot of people in the stands, and is a great role model for the young kids. All the jerseys/shirts you see in the stands are alwayws Mauer/Morneau. The all star game just got awarded to the Twins and now this…….I just don’t understand why our payroll is close to what it was when we were in the Dome. What happened to having a new stadium so we can attract free agents and pay some bigger contracts? If Mauer gets traded, that stadium will be 10-20,000 people for years to come.
August 29, 2012 at 4:21 pm #1095552I have no problem with letting him walk. I think the Twins figured out that they’re not a BIG BOY player in the market. We used to build teams around pitching and defense and we were in the hunt every year it seemed. After the M & M contracts, things went to SHIAT because we couldnt find any good pitching. Add in the fact that Mauer will alwasy have knee issues,, let him go. Thanks for the time but it’s a buisness and the Twins made a mistake with those 2 huge contracts. AND No, I wasnt jumping up and down when they signed both of them either.
August 29, 2012 at 7:21 pm #1095617I don’t have a problem with doing things the old fashioned twins way, but I think if they could do that, they would. Problem is, we don’t have any middle infielders who can hit .280 or above and have decent defense. We also don’t have any major league ready pitchers that are a 1,2, or 3 starter aside from Diamond (which a half year’s performance is nothing to bank on as your ace from here on out). When you have pitchers who pitch to contact, you need defense behind us. I’d like it to be back to the days when we had a Johan Santana in the bullpen due to no room in the rotation. Those days won’t be around for a while. I honestly think that if they actually spent some money, not big money, but just some money, on pitching this year, they would be in contention witht he Chicago’s/Detroit’s of the central. But then again, that’s always been our issue, we are content with just being competetive and a first round exit if we do make the playoffs. The twins are raking in way more money than they did at the Dome, they can afford pitching, especially legitimate 2/3’s if they wanted to–Another Carl Pavano type if you will.

Adios!!August 29, 2012 at 8:36 pm #1095636Joe’s going no-where … obviously.
Not to state the obvious but as far as pitching goes there is none to be had.
The game goes in cycles were are just on the downward side of things right now…. nothing to do with M and M or any contracts just the law of averages taking over for a bit.

I agree, let him go.. its not that the twins cant find good pitching, they dont want to pay to keep it.
Nothing better than turning on sports center to see losche, dickey, santana, garza, bennett highlighted ever night Oh ya and Nathan just set the record in Texas for savesAugust 29, 2012 at 10:09 pm #1095657Quote:

LOL, yeah the cycle is you win with veteran franchise players (mauer/marneau) then you dump them and start over with new prospects ya got from dumping your franchise players.
When you have a dug-out full of veterans and your 25 games under .500 something has to give. Start dumping and start dumping at the top!!August 29, 2012 at 10:22 pm #1095659He has a no trade clause in his contract, hes not going anywhere unless the Yankees pony up but Joe would have to approve it.
