when most needed usually at the dock launching UP switch doesn’t work, last time I toggled down hoping to trigger UP switch to work, no help and jammed into transom saver, had to relieve pressure and manually raise, personally I think it is a wiring issue, because the motor switch doesn’t work and at the same time the console switch doesn’t either? But it’s not always inoperative (motor switch).. I guess I need to trace some wiring, any ideas?

    thanks

What kind of motor and how old?
Usually, this is due to a relay going out. Your motor should have an “up” relay and a “down” relay. If you find the two relays, interchange them quick to determine if it is actually the relay. If you interchange them and now the down does not work, you’ve found your problem. Buy the relay at an auto store. It will be about 1/2 price less than a marine dealer store. If it is not the relay, check all wiring and the ground as stated earlier.
    Good luck with it.

Should be a relay. On mine, after having replaced both relays and still having problems, I accidently bumped the wire while holding the tilt button. Turns out the constant flexing had broken the wire to the pump, inside the insulation. I replaced the wire and everything was fine.

I have a 1987 110hp Johnson that this happens to on occasion. I take the cowling off and slap the black box with all the wires in it like I am Fonzie, and it works. Eventually I will take the time to troubleshoot it and actually fix it, but the Fonz is getting me by for now.

    If it’s a 2011 it should be under warranty….
I would take it in…it sounds like more than just a relay..
Let a Pro look at it…
    Good luck
