Required:
1) High school graduation or the equivalent with some science courses and two years of experience in relevant academic and work experience may be substituted.
2) Experience with fish health and behavior
3) Experience conducting research in laboratory setting
4) Experience with statistical techniques needed to evaluate data sets
5) A valid driver’s license.
Preferred:
1) Specific knowledge and experience analyzing fish behavior
2) Specific knowledge and experience analyzing odor chemistry and physiology
3) Demonstrated ability to direct and run independent research projects in the laboratory
4) Strong organizational skills.
5) Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
Duties/Responsibilities
This individual will work with Dr. Peter Sorensen (and a postdoctoral associate in the future) to maintain invasive fishes (carps) in the laboratory and then test how they respond to isolated sex pheromones and food attractants. Great care to data collection, archiving and analysis is required. Individual will need to summarize data in reports. A high level of independence and accountability is expected. Excellent knowledge of fish biology, behavior and ecology is required. Specific responsibilities are as follows:
35% Maintain collections of sensitive and critical invasive carp in the laboratory while ensuring fish health and that they do not escape from the facility. Some evening and weekend work will be required.
35% Help design, organize and then run laboratory tests of how pheromones and food odors can be used to attract carps.
5% Enter data into databases.
5% Analyze scientific data.
5% Write data reports for use in government publications and peer-reviewed literature.
5% Maintain laboratory and order supplies as needed by PI.
5% Perform directed literature searches and design possible experiments.
5% Other miscellaneous task to be assigned.
