THAT MAY BE A NEW STATE RECORD MOONEYE!!!!

    LET US KNOW

Like most rough fish, the state record mooneye has probably been caught and thrown back into the river to float unceremoniously downstream.

Those little suckers are a pain in the butt. Slimy as the day is long and for some reason, they inhale your hook like it’s a Cheeto.

Used to catch a lot of those in the Wisconsin river. Have not caught too many in the Miss as they rarely hit lures. They do bleed easily if hooked wrong. Their scales also come off easily. I remember they would jump a lot. Might be fun on ultralight or a fly rod. There is also a Goldeneye which is related. I also remember teeth on the tongue.

They are awesome smoked!!!!!!!! Tulibee family. I do not get where they are slimy/oily in my experience they are not. Maybe catching them in the winter and on the Croix makes a difference. Never caught them in the summer.

    Because I ate them.

Mooneye seem to school in the winter and they are so hard to point down in the winter its a hit and miss. But when they hit they are the funnest around.

By the way that one in the picture: big.

Not sure I could eat one, not that hungry I guess. I would rather dig for worms and catch a bluegill before I ate one of those. Just the stink that comes off of them when you catch one is enough for me to outlaw them in the boat. Shake them off with pliers over the water or cut the line.
