Key Rod Setups

If you can only have 4 rods in the boat, what would they be. Not looking for brand, but setup for what kind of fishing. Example; bottom bouncer, rigging, slip bobber, throwing cranks, trolling etc.. Has been a key point of discussion amongst friends while downing a few beers. Safer topic than religion or politics. I know there are a ton of variables, time of year, body of water, blah blah blah. We’re talking overall, covers most situations.

Decided to finally end the debate by getting the advice of experts on IDO. Next time I can say, “they” said this is the answer.

If you are looking at rods in general for all types of fishing (not taking baits/lures into consideration), my list would be
    1. 6′ light action rod, spinning reel, spooled with 4lb transoptic or powerpro-(slip bobbering panfish, vertical jigging, limited walleye use…trout fishing )
    2. 6’6″ medium light w/ spinning reel-8 to 10lb powerpro (jigging for walleyes (in the 1000 ways ), finesse bass fishing, heavy cover panfish, light catfish, some trout)
    3. 7′ medium rod, casting reel (bass workhorse, some walleye trolling, throwing cranks, etc)
    4. 7′ Medium heavy rod, casting reel w/braid (pike, muskie, trolling bigger/deeper cranks)

Thats what I come up with-and whats usually in my boat at all times with a few backups

The rods that get loaded on my boat depends on what I am after. For the river it would be two medium lites one with 832 hi vis in 10 the other with 20lb Power pro, and then two trolling rods for bouncing or long lining. When catfishing I put 6 medium heavy rods with 20lb hi vis PP on all of them.

I wasn’t even going to respond. You would figure a reporter would know that more fish of all species have been caught on jigs world wide than any thing else.

    You’d sure think
If I’m just taking 4 rods
    1. 6’9″ mlxf spining that will work for bobber fishing gills, pitching blade baits and drop shotting for bass
    2. 7′ m fast spinning good for pitching tubes for bass, wacky worming and casting stickbaits.
    3. 7’1″ med xf casting rod a great all around bass/pike/walleye stick.
    4. 9′ xh fast casting rod for hucking Muskie baits!

Seriously, who starts a post like this? If my wife gets a hold of it, I’ll never be able to explain to her why I have more than 4 rods hanging in the garage. I think we should get a moderator involved.

I would suggest set-ups that will multi-task as much as possible.

    7’6″ MM
    rigging,3 ways,miller rigs,Denver rigs, double rap rigs.trolling, stickbaits,cranks, and dead rods.

6’8″ mono rod for dragging, pitching jigs and or vert jigging

6’9″mlxf hardlinepitching rod. Blades, bucktails, deep verticle jigging.

Isnt too much other than leadcore you would need for the mighty Miss.
    Good luck!
