Hey guys….. my dad is looking to upgrade his Lund from a 25hp up to about a 40hp motor. Boat is rated for 45hp. He’s been looking at E-Tech, Yamaha 4-stroke, and Mercury 4-stroke. When it comes to getting the best bang for the buck, which way would you guys go and why. Thanks!

I am in the same situation…I have a 25 hp on a 16′ Lund rated for 50 hp. One thing I have found is it is expensive to buy a motor seperatly vs. a package deal w/ boat and motor. When I looked at a new 2012 yamaha 40hp 4 stroke I was quoted about $7,200. Newer 4 strokes or even Etecs seem to hold their used value pretty good.

I am hoping this Fall/Winter I might be able to upgrade at better prices.

Yamaha,Shifter is up on the handle so no need to lean back to shift, variable RPM switch on the handle.Have a very good rep.I just got a 60 a couple months ago and have no complaints.

The Yamaha is an awesome motor. I like the Mercs too, but the VTS system on Yamaha is a great feature, and I feel that the Yamaha holds its value better than any other brand.

Ditto……If this is a motor you might inherite someday in the distant future I would buy the Yamaha. If this is a boat that might get sold or traded in the next few years then I would shop price only.

In this day and age I would not worry a bit about durability.

Something to think about, maybe dad wants to check with a dealer like Hallberg marine. I know they do a bunch of business with the resort folks. Maybe look at a 3-5 year old resort motor and sell his outright?

Good to see you are still around Ken, hope all is well!!

I’ve done two “motor swaps” with Lacannes in Fauribault and have nothing to say but positive. When you deal look at the rigging prices. They can add up. In my dealings with Lacannes the net price of the trade in, new motor, and rigging there were really no other dealers who came close to their “out the door prices”. Nice guys to deal with too, closed my last deal in June with them completely over the net.

And BTW…both the new motor were Yammies 50 & 115 4 strokes. Darn good motors. Nothing wrong with other motors. Always owned OMC 2 strokes before. Never lookin’ back.

    What about Suzuki?

Personally, I’d put Suzuki on at least the “worth a look” list. They seem to get good reviews and they are adding a lot of features like the RPM switch from Yamaha.

I’d also be interested to hear if anyone out there is running a Tohatsu 4 stroke? I notice that a lot of commercial and work boats use Tohatsu and that got me wondering. It doesn’t seem to be because of low price because Tohatsu isn’t especially cheap. Are they any good, I wonder?

I know a resort owner that’s running a Tohatsu (on trial). He hates the weight of the motor vs. a 2-stroke but he was just getting it put on when I was up to LOW. I’ll see if I can dig up an impression from him.

Dad has heard great things about Suzuki as well but according to the sales guy, they don’t offer a 40hp.

Given the feedback, I think I’ll encourage a Yami purchase. He’s already a Yami fan so that should make it an easy quest!

Thanks for the feedback guys and……. nice to know I haven’t been forgotten! Miss you guys….. really do! Darn that “earning a living thing”……. Take care all!

I have a 40 Yamaha tiller….love it. No problems in 2 years. Have owned Johnson, Merc in the past….Yamaha by far the best. On a well loaded Lund SSV 16 it performs really well…I couldn’t be happier.

When I asked a guide down in Mexico if he liked his Yamaha he said, “Yamaha no fix!”

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve purchased 9 used Yamaha’s over the years and I’ve never had to do a thing but change oil. Very reliable motors.

    KEN,
    Where you BEEN??
Good to see you hanging around, Hope all is well.
With a member no. of 12, I know you have a few stories or tails you havn’t told yet.

Motors, you can NOT, did I say NOT, go wrong with a Yamaha. My last 2 have been SOLID reliable 4 strokes.
Key word for me is RELIABLE…
let us know what he decides.

You make me laugh Jack! There’s so many new members here now, I could tell all the old stories you’ve heard before all over again and almost no one would know! Saw some of your Mille Lacs pics….. nice fish!

I’ll let you know what he does but I think he’ll go Yamaha. He too, has had one before and that should weigh greatly in his considerations. Not too mention, the recommendation of “#1 son”.

    AND

I’d sure like to HEAR ALL OF THEM again, and KNOW I’d enjoy them as much as the first time around.

Honestly some of my best IDO (FTR) times have been reading the posts between you and Ken Christensen. I’d sign on at 1am JUST to see what each of you had to say to each other. 8- 10 years ago, special times, Special people. RIP Rivereyes…..

    Thank-you,

    Really hope ALL IS WELL,

    Jack

BUT…. can I count on you to tell the WHOLE story as well??? I love ya brother but I’m bearing some doubts….

Jack, Rivereyes and I could’ve made a cartoon strip and titled it “Ken vs. Ken”! That was indeed a special time….. and I can’t put to words how much I miss him. People would’ve thought we didn’t like each other but we were odd ducks that way. We actually related to one another because of our stabbing, sarcastic sense of humor. If we could’ve posted our pms online without considering who’d be reading them, we probably would have copy/pasted them over. We literally cried from laughing so hard at each other’s barbs, and we bonded because of it. He and I recognized that finding someone you can do that with, without consequence, is quite rare and we definitely found an appreciation for each other. I miss him terribly…..

Steve, I have some possible complications regarding the GTG date but if that window opens up, I’m definitely coming down! I’ll be able to let you guys know in advance which way it’s going to go. It’d sure be great to see everyone again and catch up on all I’ve missed! IDO folks are the best!!!
