On a PC I use the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard (may also be called the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard depending on your operating system). I bought a large USB drive (16GB) and used it with the wizard to transfer my old files and settings from my old computer with Windows XP to a new one with Windows 7. Worked great and the wizard’s on-screen instructions were pretty clear to follow.

Use a firewire and just drag and drop the files you want to the hard drive on the new computer. The new computer hard drive should show up on the computer desktop that you are wanting to copy the files from.

This does work awesome with Windows 7. I’ve also just used an external hard drive to back up to and then put on the new one. It’s a good idea to back up to those once a month anyway in case your computer crashes.

Depending on how many photos you have, you can use one of the free cloud storage sites that are out there. I use Sugarsync to back up my photos. I prefer this site over others because they offer 5GB of free storage. Once you install the program on your computer, you can sync whatever folders you want with their cloud storage. When you get your new computer, install Sugarsync and you can then re-sync the files onto your new computer. They also have phone apps so you can sync or retrieve any of the files from your phone as well. The nice thing is that if you add, change or delete files, the changes are also made in the cloud.
