Wisconsin or Minnesota License?

4 of us are coming up from IL early in September for 3 days to fish for walleye, and some catfish. We’re going to use dragging jigs(a technique taught to myself and a buddy by Marty Hahn last year), and if that gets slow, we’ll do some catfishing. We may also try our hands at flathead fishing at night. We’ll be staying at Everts, but since we plan to keep some fish for the table at home, I’m wondering which license would be best? Any guidance would be appreciated!

Pretty sure the Wisconsin License will allow you to take home more walleye/sauger than the Minnesota License.

I think you will need the WI.

Although you won’t need a MN license, I have to recommend a WI non resident license.

Your daily limit is 6 walleye/saugers in WI. With a MN license, your 6 daily limit is your possession limit….if that’s important to you.

With the WI you can keep more fish, just make sure you catch them out of the WI side if you keep more than your MN limit. If the DNR watches you catch your limit on the MN side one day, then the next day you keep a fish from the MN side you will get a ticket. And you best believe that every one of us have probably been watched by the CO with binoculars from a long ways off and we have no idea. They do it all the time.

Have to follow the laws on the side you are fishing, no matter where your license is from.

If your staying in Wis. from out of state you will need a Wis.license.It is in black and white in the rule book.

Bk is about to get a lesson.

Stuart, please refer to page 60 of the WI Fishing Regulations.

I can’t copy sideways text, but it says, “residents of other states are required to have either a MN or WI non resident license” to fish the border waters.

Is what your saying listed somewhere else?

One thing I know for a fact is there is NOTHING black and white when it comes to border waters.

    Wisconsin

The WI DNR will spend your license fees more responsibly than the MN DNR will.

Which is why Wisconsin’s fishing is better than Minnesota’s

Yes BK they can fish boarder waters but when staying in Wis.over night they will need a Wis lic.I know a guy that got his ask in trouble for it a while back.Went to court and was fined.
I do not have a Wis.rule book in my poss. as I avoid that crap hole state as much as possible.

Speaking of which, shouldn’t you be getting back to your webcam instead of posting on a fishing website? I don’t pay $29.99/month to read words.

    Now there’s a technicality.

I asked Tyler about a WI licensed fisherman (from any other state but MN) if he would ticket a person staying at a MN motel while in possession of 12 walleyes. He said as long as I was assured they were fishing the river, he would not.

This might come down to the mood of the CO at the time.

As I’ve said, there is no black and white when it comes to MN/WI border waters.

Just get the Wisconsin license and stay on the correct and cool side of the river.

There has to be some law against someone from a state other than MN or WI staying in MN and buying a WI license so they can keep more fish. You would think MN would be wanting to keep the money in their state, and the same goes for WI.

If you bought both MN & WI license I think you could have both limits in your possesion.

I hate the boarder water discussions so I’m dropping out right after I say this. And remember, I love my ido family whether you think I’m nuts or not

I think the regs for both states are black and white. Why argue over stupid loop holes. If you can read and comprehend, you will know what is wrong and what is right

If you are fishing the boundary waters and from MN. You need the MN license. If WI resident, a WI license. Being from IL. I would purchase the license from the state I am launching from. If met by the warden at the landing there will be NO confusion and your party will not draw suspension as long as you are following the regs. You will need both WI and MN regs if you go with the WI license. You will always need to follow the MN regs on the MN side even with the WI license…period! You also need to follow the MN regs even when fishing the WI side with a MN license.
Yes, there is an imaginary line down the river that separates MN from WI

    That’s all Folks

Thanks for all the info, guys. I looked up the Wisconsin regs and they’re pretty clear. So-with four guys fishing three days, and staying on the Wisconsin side, we can keep 300 flathead catfish, and 72 25 inch walleyes or saugers.

I just checked the regs and on pg 55 it states that you can fish the entire boarder waters, and you can keep whatever amount of fish per the state you are licensed for ( WI or MN).
There are rules for nonresidents also.

We’ll probably fry the sheepies right on the boat!
