Hey guys I need your help. Heading to lake Erie to fish and hiring a guide. Just wondering how much we should tip the guide? Like what percentage of the total cost. Thanks for the help guys

What are your expectations of the captain. He/she charges what he needs to to make a living. If he exceeds your expectations tip accordingly, if not, tip accordingly. Last time I was there the trip was $600 the captain was fantastic so we tipped him $100.

Our trip is worth 1,100 dollars for two days of fishing. Would a 100 dollars a day be ok? Too much? Too little?

Just my opinion. If you have a good time and catch fish. An 18% tip would be fine.

    Have fun

This gets asked a lot. At $550 per day I think $100 per day is a pretty decent tip. If he does a great job consider upping it a bit. That’s my $0.02

    agreed
and if U get a zero 4 a guide then that’s what he gets
believe it or not they are out there
just because they have a fifty thousand dollar boat – it don’t make them a guide

I don’t mind tipping but I think many forget that tipping comes from (they think) To Insure Promptitude, and not just because you got your food/service on the same day.

Tips should imho be for service above and beyond, you pay $500+ to be guided for a few hours and he doesn’t produce results I doubt a $100 tip is in order, you can go out with a buddy and not catch fish.

On the other hand, a $100 tip for a trip that netted you a personal best, taught you a few tricks and had a guide do everything he said he would may not be enough.

So for me, I tip on how the service was carried out, sometimes more than 20% often less.

As a friend once said, Tips are not an entitlement, well, unless you live in Minn…:)
