x-fast rod casting distance

The other week I was fishing some open waters and decided to rig up a castmaster on my xfast rod out of convenience to find out that it will not cast anywhere as any of my other rods. Its a 6’9 ml xfast spin w/ 6lb fc. I tried with 1/4 and 3/8 roostertails and castmasters, all with similar results.

When casting, it felt like I couldn’t get any energy to load up in the rod. Is it the casting technique? Lure size, profile or type? Or are they just not meant for distance?

This is my go-to rod for jigging and split shot in smaller lakes and in channels. And I know those type of lures aren’t really optimized for use with xfast rods, but I am just itching to know why.

Depends what type of cast you have, if you have a whip cast you will find they will not cast as far as a Mod or Mod-Fast because there is less of the rod bending on the cast.

I can cast a MLXF plenty far with 1/16 and 1/8oz lures, farther than I have ever needed to. Try a new line or a reel with a wider spool. a 3/8oz kastmaster should spool your reel with 6lb line on the cast, with a 6’9 MLXF. Its probably your line.

By 6lb FC, do you mean fluorocarbon? If so, it is known to shorten casting distance because it is less pliable and has more memory. Try a fluoro coated mono, such as P-Line CX. You get the sensitivity of fluoro yet great casting distance. It is all I use on my walleye jigging rods that do not have braid.

The type of guides on the rod makes a difference also. If that rod had recoil micro guides and the line has memory or you have a small diameter spool, as BK K mentioned, your distance will be reduced…put a limp 6# braid like 832 or PP Slick on the rod and watch that spoon go!
