I’m sure this subject has been broached before, but we need some help. We have a solid group of 7 guys that love to fish and be in the outdoors. We need a place to stay for a few nights. We looked into the Rainy Lake Houseboats, but have a few guys that can’t swing that kind of ching right now. We like the Northern MN area and want to do the trip in June. Does anyone have some hidden gems that you know about? We want to fish pretty hard, eat well (we all cook), and just get away from it all for awhile. Thanks gang!

I would still try and swing Rainy if you could and everyone’s into going that far.
Check out Thunderbird Lodge. They have Hotel rooms and reasonable cabins.
Just hard to beat that and stay this side of border… IMHO.
Ash river would be another cool spot.

You could rent a house (in pretty much any price range) on most of the popular lakes in northern MN from VRBO.com. With 7 guys, you could get a pretty nice place for a reasonable cost. We’ve done this on Mille Lacs and Vermillion.

If you like to fish a variety of lakes I would stay in the Cass Lake area that way you are only a short drive from Cass Lake, Leech Lake, Lake Winnie and several smaller lakes that offer a wide variety of fishing species.

Charter on lake Michigan or a launch trip on Mille Lacs. You can charter the whole boat to your selves on Mille lacs.

If you’re interested in renting out an entire launch on Mille Lacs Will at Barnaveld’s resort is your best option as he has a smaller boat (12 person) and is very flexible in working to whatever schedule your group would like… We’ve done batchelor parties with him before and had a blast. They also have some very reasonable prices on cabins.

If you are looking for a hidden gem take a look at Spider Lake Resort (there are 2 resorts on the lake, this is the better one) north of Grand Rapids. Spider is an excellent Muskie, Bass, Walleye, and Panfish lake that is partially in a national forest so much of the lakeshore undeveloped

My hidden gem would be Stokes Bay Resort. Very east end of Rainy on the Canada side. Boat in, we launch on Kab and portage at Kettle Falls. Very reasonably priced. Rustic and great fishing – two of my favorite things. I’ve been going up there for about 8 years. Stokes Bay website is:

Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions.
    Good luck.

What about your Minong area connection? Or are you looking for a change of pace?

Good point Suzuki. Many of the guys we are going with have spent a lot of time in NW WI. We are looking for something different (and a few dif. bars that will let us still enter their establishment).

I vote for Rainy. Try Birch Point Camp. The cabins are small but very affordable. 7 guys would need two cabins, but I think you could probalby fit 7 guys around the table in one cabin for cards and such. Pat and Mary are great hosts. They have a firepit right on the lake and a picnic table there too. Good Luck.

oh yeah, went to grade school with Dean the owner, been there several times. Here’s my 2 cents Iowana Beach resort on Portage Lake, nestled on Portage Lake right between Portage Bay of Leech lake and the South end of Winni. Older cabins, cheap, and clean. The owner (Brad)will do a good job on keeping you happy.
