2007 Chev – Ignition Lock??

I have a 2007 Chev 3500 HD with the 6.0 Vortec. I have an intermittent problem. Every once in a while, I’ll put the key into the ignition, turn to start and nothing. I’ll get all of the initial dash lights, radio, lights ect all work but no start. I’m pretty sure this is the ignition lock kicking in. I can see the ignition lock icon lit up on the dash. It’s like the chip in the key went bad. I have switched keys and still have the problem on occasion. Could this be the “reader” in the ignition??

In every case I have taken the key out of the ignition, replace and try again. Eventually the truck will get past the lock and start. But what a pain in the azz~~ Just wondering if anyone else has had or heard of this issue and what needs to be fixed. Just coming to end of warranty period in November.

that or the brake switch… I assume with a Chevy, you also need to have your foot on the brake for starting.

Sounds like worn ignition or key.I would get it back before warranty runs out.Death of ign.switches is the “custodian key chain”.I carry two sets of keys. One with truck key and remote fob,the other has everything else.I’ve worked on cars for 40 years, the ones I see with worn switches usually have big key rings. You might clean your ring before taking it in.They may concider wear or abuse.

No need to step on brake.

Always have had just the key and FOB. I do the same. All other keys on a different ring. Truck only has 25k miles.

Remote start? Sometimes these can cause issues with the ignition lock. Notorous with GM.

Sorry, had a brainfart, I was thinking of starting without a key… I would lean towards worn tumblers or is the steering locking it, with wheel lock ? Does pulling on wheel either way help ?

Try to start in neutral. Also hold key to start position and move shifter around. Just might be neutral safety switch.

Ignition lock cylinder is bad, I have replaced ALOT of those in the GM trucks, but on the earlier years (1996-2003)

It is easy to tell once the lock cylinder is removed, just use a screwdriver or needlenose pliers to start the truck, if it starts all the time put a lock cylinder in it.

Seems to me that your lock cylinder IS turning, but you get no action as far as the starter turning over? The lock cylinder case is probably the culprit. It is what contains what you call “the reader”. It could also be the ignition switch itself. Either way, If it is still under warranty, I would certainly bring it to the dealer.

Yes, this is correct. I just set up an appt. I guess I was hoping others had this problem. Would like to have heard its the key…. I hate it when it is intermittent.

    I’ll post what they find.

Make sure the gear shifter is all the way in the park position. My shifter got loose and I couldn’t get my key out unless i held up on the shift lever.

    I hate intermittent problems.

Have you tried spraying the keyhole with electronic contact cleaner and blowing it out with an airhose? If that makes it better, but it comes back again you probably will want to change the ignition switch.

    Good luck.

Will be dropping off the truck in the morning. I have done quite a bit of internet searching and there are others who have this problem. Some causes are defective steering wheel postion sensor, or defective passlock sensor, or possibly defective power train relay.

I do notice that I do not have a steering wheel lock any more. Meaning I can turn the steering wheel with the truck off, in park, with key out. So steering wheel position sensor may be the culprit here???

I did catch the problem on video and sent it over to the dealership. I know the truck will start and run perfect tomorrow. So, nice to have it on video.

I’ll let ya all know how it turns out. Man I hope they can fix this!!!

After 2 seperate trips to the dealer covering 5 days of trouble shooting, finally fixed. The problem was a bad BCM. (Body Control Module) Unfortunately, not covered under warranty. (The 5 year is drivetrain) Parts and labor $740. Nothing cheap on a one ton thats for sure!

Wow only 25,000 miles and they won’t cover it, I understand it’s over 3 years but you would think they could cut you a break and at least discount it.

As they say if it’s got boobs or tires sooner or later it’s going to give you problems!!
