And based on reports and surveys they haven’t been seen in awhile. Hmmmmmm maybe they have gone invisible.

Yeah, to be honest I have my doubts that they’re actually a viable MN species, but they’re on the official species list…

Massassaugas are also known as Pygmy Rattlesnakes. Think Timber Rattler, only no more than about 11″ long.

And yeah, BK, in terms of MN rattlesnake habitat you sorta hang out at ground zero. The real consolation for you is that they all live ON the bluffs and you’re fishing BELOW the bluffs. So you shouldn’t worry… they don’t want to be anywhere near you either.

Must be the smell of flathead slime.

Rattlesnakes will leave the bluffs to come down near the water. We used to “KILL” one or two every summer near our artesian fed holding pond. The court house at Waukon would give us 5 dollar bounty for each tail.

I think they are protected now…least that’s what I was told.

Yeah, I heard they’re protected too. Right up to the edge of my property or the imaginary boundary I make for me and mine. So?
    Never ate one knowingly.

My oldest boy got bit by a water snake july 4th. Bled like a stuck hog as they say. Once on the arm that would not let go. Had to pull it off him. And once on one index finger. The arm bite has festered many times and so far he’s squeezed 5 small snake’s teeth from it.
Partly my fault I guess since I showed him at the age of two how to handle snakes and not be afraid of them.
