anybody have any ideas on why my reverse suddenly doesnt work on my truck? It acts just like its in neutral and I have to let off the gas to get it to shift gears in drive.

Sounds like what happened to my 2000 S10 V6. About a day after I noticed it, an awful clunk and I was buying a rebuilt transmission.
Have you checked the tranny fluid?
Sounds just like a 99 1500 silverado I had. I was putting a rebuilt in the next day, not fun.
Tranny for sure.
Buddy had this happen last year on the ramp launching on the St. Croix.
Reverse went out – then I believe gears 2 and 4.
I know exactly what the issue is:
That damnable bow tie on the grill. To solve the problem you must replace it with a blue oval.
Seriously, though… it’s either super simple (linkage) or super not (trannie took a dump). If you can have someone you trust work the shifting lever while you watch the linkage that’ll tell you if it’s super simple.
Otherwise it’s reman tranny time. Not the worst job in the world, but a good day’s work.
At that age no warranty left either… sucky.
That would be your transmission.
If you can get it up to highway speed, you’ll more than likely notice no overdrive either. Your transmission is more than likely skipping gears as well.
Been there, done that… 1999 GMC Sierra that I got to 250,000 miles.
New(er) Ford F-150 in the driveway as of last Monday.

Easy fix…jack up radiator cap and drive new truck under it.

I like that! I just may steal it and use it myself.
Hope you get your truck running… there’s nothing more depressing than perfectly good busted equipment.
Sound like the same thing that happed to my GMC.
Tranny went out with no prior troubles.
I have been told that transmission problems are common in the late 90’s and early 00’s GMC 1/2 ton pick ups and suburbans. I know first hand of 4 that failed including my own 1999 Suburban. For me it was a $2500 hit.
My 2003 Suburban lost tranny at 86K going up the hill by The Bluffs. Limped it back to Rochester at 15mph on the shoulder. $2400 for brand new with 3 yr 100K warranty.

x2..cept I wasnt going to sink any more money into that piece of crap…They didn’t know it, but the dealer had me by the cajones since I couldn’t back out of their parking spot and I wasn’t going to push it out of there.
After 6 hours of negotiations, going over the truck I wanted with a fine tooth comb and exploring my options for financing, I walked out of their with a hell of a deal on a newer truck
drove that truck all the way from Madison to Chicago in 3rd gear.
Sounds like a tranny issue. We went through 3 in our 98 with very similar symptoms.
just got off the phone with the transmission shop and they know exactly what the problem is. It’s the same place that just rebuilt the trans about 40k ago so we’ll see how they like the idea of fixing their problem.
