I am looking at buying a 2003 Chevy duramax with the allison trans, my concern is the number of hours on the engine. I has 3700+ hours on it with only 98,000 miles. Has anybody had any experience with this model? The dealer showed me all of the vehicle maintenance history. The only thing that stood out to me were the glow plugs and injectors were replaced at 60,000mi.

Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Had an 02. They are good motors. Sounds like the one you are looking at did a lot of idleing. Might have been a plow truck too. Check front where plow brackets attach. Its actually a good thing that the injectors were replaced. The originals had a history of going bad. I sold mine to my nephew at 135,000 and he has 200,000 on it now and he beats the crap out of it. He did have to replace the injectors at 160,000 but that was the first time.

Forgot to mention the Allison tranny is great as long as you don’t put a tuner on it and crank the hp to high.

    I have 3800 hours and 260000 miles on it…

Its been a great truck with only a few repairs needed!

    good luck

Yeah I am not going to do anything to it. I am just looking for something to pull a 5th wheel camper and my boat at the same time rather than driving 2 trucks when my family wants to go camping.

Hop I would ask that dealer if they have any service records on it, then see if the mileage differs. Then ask if the cluster was changed… you have to program the mileage and hours….if they were being “sneaky” they could of programmed the right hours and “fixed” the mileage….good luck

They showed me a carfax report and had all of the maintenance records so I do not know how they could fake a carfax report as I watched the guy pull it up on the computer and print it at his desk.

I was curious so I checked the miles/hrs on my 06 Duramax and have almost exactly half the miles and half the hours of the one you’re looking at. I don’t plow and it has been driven what I would consider as every day driving. I like to let it warm up a bit before I take off (summer or winter) and always let it idle long enough for the exhaust temps to come down before shutting it off, which I consider SOP when driving a diesel.

I recall a poll on a Duramax forum and I think the average was right around that 30mph mark, so I think the truck you’re looking at is right in the ballpark.
