I like hockey and I’m pretty pumped for the upcoming season, but that was boring.
July 9, 2012 at 11:33 pm #1082408Pug – what are your thoughts regarding how young Yeo will handle development of all this talent?
I really haven’t formed an opinion yet but his sometimes military style isn’t what I’d call a good fit for today’s young stars of tomorrow.
Will be fun to watch the Wild the next 2 – 3 years to see if they can bring a championship (or at least compete) to a city that seems to faulter when it’s all on the line.

I like Yeo. That’s who lobbied for on the hockey boards, when people thought there was no way Fletch would take another big risk at coach. My reasoning precisely is that he know how to handle young talent. Last year, and this year too, they had a show on FSN called becoming Wild. Much of the show was devoted to Yeo and Houston and their Calder Cup run where they reached the finals.
Where do you get the military style from? After watching Becoming Wild and seeing his rapport with the youngsters, I actually see him as a players coach.
By the way, along those lines, look out for Bret Bulmer next year who is kind of under the radar now with all the other prospects and the FAs getting all the attention. Yeo seems to be very close with Bulmer and I too like his style. I liked what I saw in the 9 games he played here last year before returning to Juniors. There might not be room on the roster right now unless Fletch makes another move, but he should go to Houston and be one of the first call ups when there is an injury.
Next year will be fun. They should make the playoffs unless the injury bug hits them even harder than the last 2 years. Then anything can happen. But you are right, 2-3 years this team is going to be elite.
One of the best things about Parise and Suter is that you basically wiped off several bad drafts by Risebrough. You add instant talent and depth that Risebrough and could never find.
July 10, 2012 at 1:38 am #1082446Watching FSN right now. Can you say “PUMPED” . I cant wait for this season. I played against zack when I was in pee wees. He and patrick eaves were both on the shatick team and man they were good. I know I’m glad I got season tickets right after they signed. Now they are going to be a hard ticket to get. Is it hockey season yet?? GO WILD

Ummm, your not going to like this answer, but… from what I read from the media following some of last years losses in regards to how they were worked the next day… I know, I know, shouldn’t believe everything I read, right?
I’ll have to read up on him. Obviously you have and I like the impression as you’ve stated. Some really talented young players and IF the chemistry and friendships can be developed it could be a lot of fun to attend the X…
Go Wild! Leopold just might be starting to walk the talk… Time will tell but it’s one heckuva start….

Well I believe it. There is no reason for the reporters to lie about that stuff. I know he works them hard, I know he was frustrated at times last year. I guess I can see why you could say his military style. I guess I was thinking along the lines of a Mike Keenan. But I think despite him demanding they play within his style and working them hard, he is a players coach.
Look at Dany Heatley. The guy had a real bad reputation before coming here. He surprised me as far as how hard he played on the ice on both ends of the rink. I don’t recall him taking 1 games off, not even late in the year. Sure, he’s slow, but there were several occasions were he broke up plays back checking. It made me wonder where Heatley got his bad reputation. And I guess I can’t say it is all Yeo, but something has changed his ethic.
July 10, 2012 at 2:49 pm #1082625Was the round table any good last night or worth watching? I recorded it but havent watched it yet.
July 10, 2012 at 7:01 pm #1082764I recorded it too and watched this morning. Nothing earth shattering. If you watched the Presser, you’ve probably heard it all.
One of the questions Suter completely answered a different question.
One nice thing was Dean Blais and Mike Eaves calling in and seeing their faces when Eaves described the winning goal against Russia that let them win the gold in Juniors. It might be worth it to fast forward to those parts.
July 11, 2012 at 1:59 am #1082892They both seemed like down to earth guys & honest.
All they really stressed was that they didn’t want to step on anybody’s toes in the Locker Rm. & They just want to Win & they both believe Minnesota has a very well balanced team with good upcoming young talent.
I thought it was kinda cool when they mentioned they both took less money so the Wild wouldn’t take such a Cap hit, because they want the Wild to still be able to add caliber players to the roster.July 12, 2012 at 1:37 pm #1083437Good point Pug, never thought about that. I wonder how many kids actually are from North Dakota? I know they import most from Canada and Minnesota but there must be some kids in North Dakota that can skate.
mojogunterPosts: 3313July 12, 2012 at 3:48 pm #1083471It wasn’t that they both signed for a lot less money for the cap hit. It was that they signed for 13 years so the salary is spread out over the 13 years to lessen the cap hit. The contracts are heavily front loaded, so they get the majority of their money in the first half of the contracts.

July 12, 2012 at 4:20 pm #1083482There are a couple kids from ND that can skate but unfortunately only good enough to play for the gophers.

I am astounded that they were so willing to play together and thought so much of each other that they wanted identical deals. You’d think Parise could have made much more than what he was offered.
I was also kind of shocked that they looked at our prospect pool. I knew it would be a good selling point, but I thought when analyzing talent they would just look at a current roster and their chances of a cup with that team.
Lastly, they obviously turned this franchise around by signing, but they also single handly made us more attractive to other free agents and said as much as they would lobby player to come here. That is also why they structured their contracts in the way that they did. Of course players lobby free agents to join them, but right out of the gate they are talking about it.
Looking at this roster, I would not be surprised to see them trade a fan favorite before the season starts for another defenseman. I am looking at you Cal Clutterbuck. It would be tough to see him go, but he might get a good return and we have several players coming up that play his style.
mojogunterPosts: 3313July 12, 2012 at 5:00 pm #1083498I hope not. I don’t see his game improving, and he hasn’t been good of late.

Maybe they can get Paul Martin and make this a hometown team….
mojogunterPosts: 3313July 12, 2012 at 5:14 pm #1083501I was very surprised they signed here. I think Parise could have gotten more money, but Suter signed for about the max he was going to get. The package deal was more of a benefit for Suter in my mind anyway. Either way I am looking forward to this season, and more so to the next few years. The move by the Wild was enough to change my mind on the franchise and me to buy season tickets again. I was disgusted in the past by the Wild sitting on their hands and not doing much of anything other than collect money from the blind allegiance of fans selling the place out year after year. It took fans bailing on them to realize they will at least try to win to keep people in the stadium. Reisbrough did more damage to this team than any other person, and I like what Fletcher has done with the team. Time will tell if it pays off or not.

Come on. At least give me some credit for having 1/8th of an ounce of hockey knowledge.

They usually get a couple kids from Grand Forks or Fargo but that’s about it. There’s not much of a talent pool when you consider there are 17 high school hockey teams in North Dakota.
July 12, 2012 at 5:54 pm #1083523Before we get to excited and start hopping up and down, remember the NHL will have a strike or lock-out this fall. We maybe looking at a short season or no season at all.
July 13, 2012 at 12:15 pm #1083724The Wild sure are reaping the benefits of landing these guys. They got a huge boost in season ticket sales, where in the last couple of seasons Wild fans were dropping them in disgust.
Last night on a mid week, mid July night in St. Paul, 6,500 people showed up at the X, not watch Parise and Suter, but instead to watch Wild prospects scrimmage.
And you know a lot of people left with bags of merchandise from the hockey lodge.
