Just got home from helping freinds pick up dead fish on the south west corner shoreline of the lake. Our group picked up 350 dead northerns just in a small area in front of some of the houses. We checked off of oak street landing and some floks were getting ready to clean up the shorline also. From the landing you could see dead norhterns both directions as well. We need some rain and cooler temps for sure.

Saw the same thing on pool 8 yesterday… Hot water must be the culprit… I saw some bruisers too near the 40″ class.

Bret and I saw a couple on Pool 7 yesterday – only a few but we commented that they were some nice sized snott rockets – all in shallower areas so we were guessing the heat too.

Is it just Northerns or are there other species too?

Jeff, KUDOS on the clean up effort. I’m sure the land owners there really appreciated the effort! Was back out of Fox this morning for a half day. Didn’t bother counting; just a lot…. measured two that were floating by. 42″ and a 40-1/2″. Sure could have been a trophy for someone
Pic is of a 30+” floating by..

About 10 years ago there was a long warm spell here in Iowa, not as bad as this one, and the Mississippi was down and alot of northerns were being caught by springs an spring fed creeks that flowed into the Mississippi. I remember the article in the paper here saying they were catching alot of them and some nice ones too. It must be the cooler water holds more oxygen and they just feel better. Any cooler rivers and creeks that flow into the Miss would probably be a good bet right now, especially the ones that have trout in the upper reaches.

Fished a small lake today that only gets to about 30′ deep. The water temp was about 85, probably warmer earlier this week. Didn’t see any floaters, but we caught a bunch of them trolling, so they were very active.

This lake does have a lot of weeds, so maybe that helps.
