Probably could not get more help answering questions and parts you may need than calling or going to Thorne Bros up Central ave, north of 694.

I too have had some interest in rod building, but the initial investment seems high to me for just a few rods.

If you don’t the best tools out there it is not that expensive. I too started building my own a coupel of years ago and started on the cheap side, but have built some very nice rods. They are very plain in looks, but man they hve very nice action. And there are plenty of others on this site that are willing to help. Just holler.

it may be on the expensive side, maybe not, depends i guess…. starting out its always gonna cost a little more because of the “learning curve” my buddy did a class through
community ed and built one that way, not that expensive sort of a cheap rod, but the feel and action is comparable to his st croix premier rod, and he told me the satisfaction he gets from nailin pigs with the rod he built for a specific purpose is worth way more to him than a legend elite, and i believe hime

As for tools, its CHEAP! Razor blade, masking tape, ink pen, an old Webster dictionary…. Be creative and think outside the box and you can get by very inexpensively.

I would look for a local shop to go to on your first rod, or someone that can help you out. Would be happy to show you, but theres a few miles from there to here….
Mudhole.com , and other online places have a great selection, but you need to know what your looking for. That is where having it in your hand before purchasing would be beneficial. If you get stuck, I’ll be more than happy to try to talk you through it! Welcome to the DIY world
