We are looking at getting a suburban for my wife. We are looking at the 07’s and newer. Anyone have any input on the newer models. How well does that cylinder shut down system work??

I got an 07 Yukon XL. The 07’s are known for oil consumption issues. Mine was one of them. They finally rebuilt the cylinders and now it is fine. I think the 07 was the first year with the cylinder shut down. I also think that is the cause of the oil consumption issues. Can’t say it gets anything special from a gas mileage perspective. The computer says 15.0 whether that means anything. That said, I really like it. Make sure if you buy one that it is under warranty until you can tell if it is eating oil. When I was getting mine fixed, I ran into 2 other buddies from Hudson with 07 Chev Pickups getting the same work done on theirs.
June 28, 2012 at 3:30 am #1079387Mom had a Tahoe with the 4 cyl shut down system. It was a freaking joke. Total waste of money for that option. K.I.S.S.
June 28, 2012 at 10:31 am #1079404Just traded my 07 Tahoe off. Have had Saburbans and Tahoes since 1994. I have to say the 07 was the best looking and driving of all but it seemed like there was always something that needed repaired. Cylinder deactivation, like Wade stated is a Joke. We don’t need it to tow because I have a 3/4 ton to pull the boat so traded it on a fuel mizer. I sure don’t miss the gas bill. [image]http://[/image]
June 28, 2012 at 11:21 am #1079411I’ve got an ’07 Silverado and I just had it rebuilt 2 months ago. Same problem, oil consumption issues. On the shut down cylinders the oil rings freeze onto the pistons. Dealer replaced all the pistons and rings and all the lifters too. They would clatter on startup. Don’t know if they have the oil consumption problems resolved in the newer one’s or not. Do a Google search on it.

I get 16 MPG on my 2000 Suburban…. Why would they shut down 4 cylinders and only get 15?

I got about 16 on my 06 Yukon XL too. You would think the cylinder shut down would have improved mileage.
Bottom line.. I didn’t buy it for the gas mileage and I would buy another. I’m just glad I didn’t have to pay to get the oil consumption fixed. That would have been expensive.
riverbassmanPosts: 255June 28, 2012 at 1:57 pm #1079480I bought a 2007 Sub. with the 5.3 motor. I had MAJOR oil consumption problems. After wrangling with my dealer, they finally replaced cylinders, rings, valves, you name it. I got it back and 200 miles later it blew up…. so…. NEW MOTOR under warranty! I will take that at 75k miles!!!
OIL CONSUMPTION….. from what I learned it was the 07 5.3 motor with ALUMINUM BLOCK. They never did get a handle on it. HOWEVER, my new motor with aluminum block is awesome, doesnt use oil.
I will say Chevy all along was awesome and they did take care of the problem. I wouldnt think twice about buying another, that Sub is an awesome vehicle!!I have on/off problems with my brake calipers locking up or dragging. I have been told my brake lines are constricting/collapsing and causes a vacume….. anyone else see this problem????
riverbassmanPosts: 255June 28, 2012 at 1:59 pm #1079483Also…..
My mileage is 16-17 on interstate/highway but drops dramatically to 13-14 city/stop go driving. This is real time mileage, checking odometer when filling up….. not just reading the screen.June 28, 2012 at 2:35 pm #1079496I have an 06 i get 18 on the hwy with the wind at my back in the city i get 13-14. and pulling my boat (16 foot alumacraft)i get 11-12. i like it. bought the wife a new mini-van (honda) now she cantake the kids to soccer with her new yoga pants that have never seen a gym as she sits there holding her i phone. Don’t we just love our surburban house wives.
June 28, 2012 at 2:52 pm #1079508I bought my 07 Yukon XL with 48K miles on it 2 years ago from the dealer in Hudson. When I bought it they said they just replaced the brakes (I assumed the front). It has about 90K on it now. I replaced the back brakes and rotors about 11 months ago and the front brakes and rotors about 3 months ago. I had this done at the same dealer. The brakes have squeaked ever since. I finally brought it back in about a month ago and they said the front brakes were defective and replaced them again under warranty. The back brakes were still squeaking so I took it back in last week. They claimed they couldn’t get them to squeak and nothing is mechanically wrong. They claim to have cleaned them up (charge me 25.00) and they should be squeak free. I didn’t even get it home (1 mile) and the squeak is still there. After spending close to 1000.00 to have the dealer replace both front and back brakes, I don’t want to have squeaky brakes. They seemed more concerned about trying to sell me their 90K service package than fixing the problem I brought it in there for. I doubt it is the same problem your having since they only squeak when you apply pressure to your brakes.
Jake_APosts: 569June 28, 2012 at 4:24 pm #1079569The ’07 Silverado gets about 19 MPG on the freeway, 15-16 or so when towing a 17 1/2′ Crestliner…I will admit that it does burn oil-about a quart every 2000 miles, but it runs like a dream. 5.3l.
June 28, 2012 at 10:02 pm #1079693Yep…Thats how I do mine. My computer does’nt calculate that stuff.
