Lake Trout, big smallies, largies… and they stocked muskies in the lake 3 or 4 years ago so it won’t be long and they’ll be growing fat and happy on the smelt as well.

Shhh I’m hoping people forget about the muskies 5-7 more years till we’re catching 50″ fish out of that system

Nice vid James, have heard alot about this lake from friends, but never made the trip. Might have to get back to the home state one long weekend to do some livebait rigging. – Quintin.

I’ve caught a couple toads here. Not a real easy lake to fish however

You can definately spend a lot of time on the lake searching for the right spots that hold fish. I have spent the last three years learning the lake and am always looking to find new spots that hold big fish.

    Ditto that!
And James, I coulda used this info for my Father’s Day trip with my oldest Son.

We avoided the lake with the Wally Tourney going on that Saturday. We’d heard that night that 54#’s won, yes with 7 fish…it was hard to sleep….

Already decided to go with Leeches, Crawlers, and Cranks and go find them…
Leeches on 8 foot fluro leaders and red hooks got the big ‘eyes. Crawlers, well they = perch! Some of those were plenty fat as well.

Did someone mention Bass? Had many 18″, and one 20, Large Mouth, never got to the Smallies….

Had to haul that one fatty Wally around in in the well for a while. She finally got rambunctious and swam off with attitude….Also worked up a long shelf to an island and picked up a couple eaters….what beautiful water. This was a first time ever on the lake for us, we’d definitely go back.

The smelt population took a HUGE hit last year, with a massive die off. The DNR was looking into this spring and were very worried about it. Most fishermen believed it was because of a rapid rise in water temps but the DNR does not think that is the case since it was lake wide and not basin to basin. There is also historical data that shows smelt to have periodic die offs like that. I don’t know how long it takes for smelt populations to recover and it will be interesting to see how that affects fishing and growth rates.

Guy’s, this lake offers monster pike also, trolling deep cranks over the thermocline produces the big mamas.

I thought I saw some big fish marks on the H-bird going from one basin to another across some deep areas, but thought, Na, can’t be right….HUMMMMM….pig Pike on cranks eh???? You know I’ll have to get back up there, but probably not until next year again….thanks for that info John 3:26

One of my favorite lakes to fish! I lived on the shores of pokeg for a few years. My dad still lives up there I take a few trips each year. I enjoy chasing eyes, crappie, bass and big pike up there. I must say this is one of my favorite videos yet!!

Usually a good summer tactic when the bigger fish chase the smelt that hang just above the thermocline. Turn on your switchfire to your ‘bird and you’ll see the thermocline and the fish hanging above.

Don’t be surprise if you tap into a few walleyes also.

Great vid. again. I know you are always looking for ideas. Ever thought about a show on a trip to In the Boundary waters? I do not know if even possible, but what a great area to be able to have in MN. I know a guy that has done a few trips that might be able to help you out I went with him once and had the time of my life.
