    or a lemon of a lure ???

I’m going with big fish…..the fight was on for just about a minute before some good hard thrashing, then I thought the line snapped but when I reeled in to reload I found the fish had totally annihilated this lure…….

I’m sure it was one of those St Croix Walleyes.

I had a brand new skitter pop end up looking very much like that compliments to a dogfish of unusual proportions.

No. Did you catch it on the spot I showed you on P2?

I bought a couple of DT’s on sale at the Gander in Brainerd a couple of weeks ago. The DT 16 was looking good to the Northerns, landed a few smaller fish on it right away. The next one got half way to the boat and got off….with half the lure and the hooks. I got the other half and the diving bill. Total piece of junk. I threw the other one away before it cost me a good fish.

especially if you were on the Croix, i’ll go with big fish. I’ve had lures destroyed that did not have wire in them, lures come back destroyed that did have wire in them, etc.

any pike/muskie in the 20+# range could do that to a lure.

i’ve had similar stuff happen down on P4 with pike/musky. see no reason that a muskie on the Croix would not do the same.

Could have been both a big fish and a lemon of a lure.I don’t think it should matter how big the fish is, the lure should hold up.
    You got robbed.

You gotta quit smack’n them on the water surface to get the weeds off For their size, I think dog fish are the worst for trashing lures and jigs. Mighty powerful jaws for their size. My guess is that it had a crack or flaw in it. Big fish put enough pressure to it to expose the problem.

I saw the same thing happen to a rapala TT lure. We saw the fish, about a 25″ northern. Took a run from the side of the boat and took half the lure with him.

I would send rapala an email with that photo..

And thats the reason you will not find a rapala in any of my boxes. They are junk. I,ve had that happen before, bills falling off, hooking tiny pike on floaters and they just rip the wire from the middle of the lure. Seems like for $10 it shouldnt just fall apart like they do. If they didnt fall apart i would gladly spend $10-$20 a lure but thats just not for me when i have to buy 5 of the same 1 because i dont know if 1 will break. I stick with the flicker shads and bagley top guns!

Ouch! Where the heck are you finding your shad raps for $10 a piece? Fleet Farm had them on sale last week for $4.99.

Im talking raps in general. The only ones ive purchased recently and no longer own due to breaking were clacklin raps and x rap shads and both of those are around $10. I havent bought a normal shad rap since the flicker shads came out.On the croix last year i got a clacklin rap in a tree(not even deep) with a quick easy snap and it completelly ripped the hook assembly out of the lure. I still feel for the price even on sale this shouldnt happen. Alot better things to spend money on then lures every week!

Leaning towards big fish + defective lure but either way its a conversation piece and kinda cool. Makes for a good fish story.

Are these lures getting bit off or are you using quite a bit of drag and they are just being ripped apart?

I don’t seem to have the problem, but I use a pretty light drag and maybe 6-10# test.

Don’t catch a lot of big fish either, that probably helps….

We all know your inability to catch big fish so my guess it was a clam and you ran it into some rocks! Just sayin!

I broke a Rapala shad rap last night just like before, this time on about a 10# sheep. I was using 7# drag and the fish was making a run when I thought he broke off, came back with the bill.

Did Rapala move production to china or something? this is stupid!
