Could this be the beginning of the end? Read the PDF from the DNR to the Band(s).
This should get very interesting in the next few weeks and months!

One can only hope changes are on the way, for the greater good of the lake.

The DNR also told the bands all sources of northern pike mortality during their netting must be accounted for, including release mortality.
That statement might be just as important as the male walleye shortage.
Long over due in my opinion…
I’m also interested in hearing what comes about the angler that was arrested last week at the Liberty Beach launch because he refused to have his boat sprayed down for AIS decontamination.
Could this be another court case in the making regarding angler discrimination? Last time I checked, tribal netters were not forced to wash their boats down after leaving the water during their season?
So the AIS law is now in place and we don’t have a choice to get our boats washed down?
This is just one of many, many areas the tribes have unique rights that the normal man doesn’t. Not much one can do unless he has deep pockets to fight it in court. Thank God someone like Steve has championed this cause!

Was that in the news?

I guess I don’t understand the big deal on having your boat sprayed and why you would refuse it? It’s free and it sure won’t harm your boat. That’s a fight I don’t think is worth the time at all.
As for the origin of the post, it’s about time someone in power says something. I don’t know that much will come of it but they are really raping the system of it’s resource and, personally, I don’t believe that’s what their ancestors ever believed in.
I’ve been up a few times this year still haven’t seen the washing station. A free boat wash sounds ok to me.
Because this was a Supreme court desision it is tough to get around but somebody deserves some credit for this.
Mention of “conservation” was intentional, because in the court order directing the DNR to manage Mille Lacs with the bands, only certain criteria — resource conservation being primary — are cause for one party to seek management changes absent the other.
I also think some of that filming that people did this spring of them dumping of Northern Pike back into the lake also helped. Hard to argue when its on film.
I see this as a big deal as up till now they were pretty much told to keep their mouth shut. It appears that they may be getting tired of that and this is a big step. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.
I had a great “Sit down” with State Rep Denny McNamara recently. He is the Chairman of a DNR Committee. He said of the Native situation “Believe me, we get it!” And high level talks are being had, and will continue. He said “Stay tuned!” I hope he is right!
I dont understand. How does the DNR have any power over the bands to make any corrections?

If I understand the article correctly, the Supreme Court ruling granted the DNR the right to amend the agreement if conservation issues presented themselves.
Ahhh. That sounds more like it. Hope it works. They aint gonna take any restrictions litely.

Our Reps. on the Federal level are on this also (Denny has heard from them on this), on our behalf. Stay tuned is right!!
