Where are your favorite places to go tent camping/fishing?

A high school buddy and myself have done BWCA….great but too much canoeing not enough camping/fishing for my taste.

We’ve done Rainy Lake, Voyaguers National Park camping/fishing the last 3 years and love it, park is great, love the scenery and solitude. When weather is good (wind not blowing) and you can get on the water the walleye fishing can be fantastic.

I would really like to hear about other places to check out that others consider “must do”.
I would prefer Minnesota or Wisconsin but wouldn’t rule out the Dakotas.
I have a 16ft boat with a 60 HP four stroke thats not afraid of big water but I also wouldn’t mind spending a week checking out several small lakes in a area surrounding a great camping spot.

    Appreciate all input.

You have to check out Lake Vermilion. Get a map, it will show you the campsites around the lake. You can camp on a different spot every night and see the whole lake. Nevermind that it’s a great multi species lake.

You’re not listing where your from in your profile…so if I told you to fish the Crow River just South of Biscay, MN, I could be telling you to fish in your back yard.

    Where do you hail from?

I have been to Vermillion only once about 20+ years ago, but I agree it is a cool lake.

My wifes parents bought a place up there two years ago and I find that I could care less about fishing anywhere else now.

I will say it again ..how nice it would be have atleast an general location mandatory on ones profile when you register on IDO, no wasting time asking location to help a member.

Chippewa Flowage has lots of great camping near Hayward, WI. I have also camped on Teal Lake near there — it was great as well.

The “Chip” at Hayward. Chippewa Campground for long-term camping is convenient to both halves and numerous islands available for overnight. Multi-species, many gravel bars and many fish cribs have been down for years. Would be a good choice, but the shallow gravel bars are rough on props.

Don’t be so fussy ………..it’s Vermilion for crying out loud. Open the age thing to 18-85

Early on my FW and I did a lot of BWCA canoe trips but as we aged we started taking more motorized BWCA trips. Unfortunately you have the wrong boat for that as there is a 25 hp motor restriction. A base camp motorized trip is a whole different world from canoeing. It allows for a screen house, a folding table, lawn chairs, coolers full of ice and a nice cot. Besides that fishing out of a canoe sucks compared to a motorized boat. Basswood Lake, Trout Lake and Saganaga are the three big lake options and any would be a good choice.

You need to hit the north shore. Lots of rustic campgrounds on lakes and streams. One of my favorite tent camping areas.

Many of those small lakes are sleepers for walleyes. Smallish but eyes none the less. Some are trout lakes.

Do Vermilion and find a free camp site on one of the islands.

Sorry changed my profile to show that I live in LaCrosse, WI about a mile from the Mississippi.
I have spent a couple weeks on Vermillion a few years back we rented a cabin both times, didn’t realize that there is decent camping oppertunities. Same with the Chippewa Flowage.
The North Shore thing definitely will get some Google time checking that area out.
I appreciate all input, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t over looking a great place that is right under my nose.
Anyone have any thoughts on the Duluth/St Louis River/Cheaumegan Bay fishing/camping thing?

i prefer camping on the big river myself.

during the day – walleye & bass fishing, boating, swimming, etc. then sneak off for some flatheads at night.

it is not very “camper friendly” at the moment though…
