I have read in books that you should use a swimming pool to tune your crankbaits. there has only been one time in my life that I have even seen a pool available at a hotel, for a fishing demo. and they had to close it to the rest of the guests for a certain time period. so who has used a pool and then which one? was it a hotel? was it hard to get? many years ago. there was one severe stretch when the river was gin, and I mean gin clear, and I spent a couple of hours tuning every bait I owned at the time.. but since then.. no go.. I would love to hear your success stories.

Think Grant just did a video on tuning crank baits. 5mph along side the boat with about 5′ of line out works.

I do it along side the boat. I have about 4-5 ‘ of line out and do a fast figure 8 or do it in a straight line.

How do you see if its running straight while pulling a figure 8?

On the straight aways. I always double check so its quicker doing a 8 i guess

I do my tuning with a short stick and 5 feet of line while I am out leadcore trolling. Out of curiosity when does this become running another line and not “tuning”??? I would think using a stick instead of a rod you would be ok but I can see a CO questioning you if your using a rod and saying im just “tuning” my baits and not fishing….

I am always checking and rechecking baits on the water, but I try to have them all tuned before I hit the water. If I ever have downtime at the cabin, I grab a rod and tune on the dock.

I have a test pond the back yard, but before that I just tuned them all at the river.

I dont think i would ever consider using a pool. A little excessive in my mind. If im out trolling on the lake, I always have an extra rod so if there is some spare time I can tune em while im out there. Do a few here and there and eventually your whole box will be good to go and you will only have to tune new cranks you buy.

Go out to the end of a pier on a lake on a calm morning, and throw out the crankbait 20-25′ and retrieve slowly back straight at yourself. It will tell you if it is out of tune.

Hairjig has a good idea, but I opt for making that lure move at least 4 mph. You want it so it runs perfect at a speed a lot higher than you will be troling.

Bang em on the rocks.. to get that “injured” bait fish effect

Anybody ever watch a minnow swim How often dose it swim perfectly straight? The perfect should constantly be searching for center but not blowing out Try the storm suspend dots to make your baits “hunt”.

I like them running straight Tim to make sure they are hitting the right depths. To give them more action I almost never troll with the rod in a rod holder. Its always in my hand and Im almost always pulling those baits forward and slowly dropping them back.

You are very right about not many minnows just swim in a straight line and at one constant speed for very long.

Reef runners are notorious for being out of tune , It’s impreative that they run directly at you, if you want 4 mph then crank fast. if they are not perfectly tuned they will ” wash out” on you, either left or right and the fish won’t touch them………
