Send Ron (sliderfishn) from the site a PM. He took me there about 8 years ago. I remember we got into some Smallmouth on the structure in the middle of the lake.

There ae quite a few nice lakes right around there on hwy 71. For stuff to do, you are literally right outside of Itasca, and Park Rapids has a cool downtown for kids (at least it used to).

Don’t forget to stop at Rocky’s Pizza in PR and get a house special!

The Deer park is nice to visit if you have kids. You have to spend at least part of a day at Itasca State Park, that is a gem.

Don’t bother fishing Eagle Lake (connected to Potato). At least I never had much luck there, but I also haven’t been there in years.

The downtown area is nice too.

Mike – it may pain you to hear this, so brace yourself. Deer Town has been closed for almost 10 years. Gone are the days of feeding partially tamed deer dried corn out of ice cream cones.

That’s a bummer. It was pretty cool even asan adult walking around and challenging the male turkeys to strut their feathers. Or feeding pop through the tube to the bears.

Come to think of it, I was there in the late 90’s I believe. I don’t remember it being crowded. And I think when I camped on Eagle Lake about 7-8 years ago, I did see it was shut down…I think.

We fished on Fish Hook Lake Just on the PR side of the lake, connected by the Fish Hook River. My cousin has been on Potato for the last three years over the 4th. They have caught decent northerns in 10-15 feet of water. There are good sunnies and some crappies near the weed edges in the same area ( you can catch Rock Bass just about anyplace.) we have found more walleyes fishing the weed edges than we have using traditional walleye methods. Potato has produced better smallmouth if you like bass fishing. My cousin used the same methods that we used on Fish Hook and scored fish in the same types of areas. We trolled 1/8 ounce jigs in fire orange or chartreuse , tipped with a small mister twister and either a 2″ chunk of crawler or a crappie minnow. If the sunnies are still on their beds, we have seen that even over the 4th, look to the reedbeds. We drifted through them sight fishing. The kids just loved it! I am surprised their screaming and wild noise didn’t spook things more. Don’t overlook fishing just out from the docks either. As far as things to do. There is a rodeo some time during late June that is kind of fun. There is a malt shop on the main drag-west side of the street-that makes malts like you just stepped into the 50’s. Cuzzin’s Candy Store is also a hot ticket. We would usually spend $30-$50 during the week just on nibbling stuff. There was also a bakery on main street. I think that has closed, but the grocery store on the east side of town produces almost as close to heaven donuts. There is a casino in Walker about 45minutes to the east on 34. We have gone to PR for 20 straight years and off and on for another 15. It is truly an amazing area. Good luck and enjoy the great white north!

Oh, if you have kids, there is a putt putt/go karts place just north on 71 as well. Used to be called World of Xmas but I think that changed.

Nice restaurant at Vacationaire on Island lake, and the Y Steak House on 71 is good as is the West Forty outside PR. I also think Dorsett has a lot of nice restaurants from what I hear.

Our neighborhood would all go up there for a week during the summer and they timed it with Lumber Jack Days, which is fun. I think they call it Logging Days now.

it has been a few years but always had good luck there. there is a sand bar that runs north-south on the east part of the lake we long lined shad raps at night for some great walleye action.also during the day we trolled crawler harnesses off the weed edges in 10-12′ dow. good pan fish on the north end of eagle lake, gills and crappies.check out eagle beach resort on eagle lake i think they still have a zip line course for family fun!!!park rapids is a fun town definitely check out the bakery and the old time ice cream shop, ice cream soda’s made the way they are supposed to be. itaska state park is a must see. just thinking about the area brings back a lot of good memories.went up there for 15 years straight, the opener, memorial day, two weeks in the summer ( last week in June thru the 4th, labor day and they kept a cabin open for use during deer hunting. relax and have a good time!!

The crappies are on fire in the area! Headwaters is a great place to golf! The fried chicken and french fries cant be beat in Dorset… Margaritas are not bad either
